Indications:
Elderberry Pelargonium Complex is a unique formula that
combines both Elderberry and Elderflower with Umckaloabo
Root. It helps strengthen the immune system and provides
immediate and effective immune support. Elderberry
Pelargonium Complex can be used as a preventative to
increase resistance to illness and help rebuild a strong
immune response, or it can be taken when already ill to
reduce symptoms and shorten the duration of the illness.
Elderberry is one of the most effective herbs to use for flu.
Studies report the herb shortens the duration of flu
symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat,
cough and body aches. Elderberry has proven to be effective
against numerous strains of influenza. The herbs constituents
neutralize the activity of the hemagglutinin spikes found on
the surface of several viruses, causing the viruses to deactivate
so they are unable to infect cells. Elderberry can be used
during an active flu, or used as a preventative to avoid getting
sick during the flu season.
Elderberry is a very concentrated source of anthocyanins,
purple pigments that serve as powerful antioxidants. These
anthocyanins enhance immune function and protect the
body against disease by boosting the production of cytokines
(proteins that regulate immune response), including tumor
necrosis factor-alpha and interleukins. Elderberry also
contains the flavonoids quercetin and rutin, and is high in
vitamins A and C.
Umckaloabo is indicated for reducing the symptoms and
shortening the duration of upper respiratory ailments, such as
colds, bronchitis, sinusitis, coughs, sore throat, congestion,
muscle aches, headaches and fever. It is a safe and effective
herbal formula that can be used by both adults and children
as an alternative to over the counter cold and sinus
medications. Umckaloabo is made from an extract of the
Pelargonium sidoides root. P. sidoides was first cultivated in
South Africa where it has a long history of use in treating
coughs, upper respiratory infections and throat irritations.
Umckaloabo can provide fast relief from the uncomfortable
symptoms of viral illnesses such as colds and most bronchial
infections. A study published in 2007 tested P. sidoides effects
on 207 patients aged 18-55 years who presented common
cold symptoms. The patients in the P. sidoides treatment
group had a significant reduction in symptoms such as nasal
drainage, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, scratchy
throat, hoarseness, cough, headache, muscle aches and fever.
Clinical trials in adults and children diagnosed with acute
bronchitis show that treatment with P. sidoides reduces the
severity of symptoms, such as coughing, expectoration, chest
pain, shortness of breath and wheezing, and shortens the
duration of sick leave from work or school by 2 days. In 2008
a meta-analysis of 4 randomized clinical trials showed P.
sidoides to be superior in efficacy compared with placebo in
the treatment of acute bronchitis. Researchers concluded that
P. sidoides offers an effective alternative to antibiotics.
Extracts of the P. sidoides root are antibacterial and
immunomodulating. Studies have identified gallic acid and its
methyl ester to be the prominent immunomodulatory
constituents of P. sidoides, with both compounds
demonstrating significant macrophage (white blood cell)
activity. Numerous other studies document P. sidoides’
antibacterial activity and confirm the roots’ efficacy in treating
the common cold, sore throat and bronchitis. Coumarins,
phenolics and unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid,
from P. sidoides demonstrate direct antibacterial activity and
significant immune stimulation of the host.
A 2007 study published in Phytomedicine examined the
impact of P. sidoides on the activity of human peripheral
blood phagocytes and found several important components
contributing to the roots’ biological activity. The study
reported P. sidoides increased phagocytosis (a major
mechanism used by the immune system to remove pathogens
from the body), increased oxidative bursts (the rapid release
of reactive oxygen species from immune cells to destroy
foreign bacteria), and increased intracellular killing of test
organisms.
