Ginger is well known for alleviating nausea due to motion

ongoing basis if nauseous all the time. Several studies in
humans have shown positive results for ginger’s effectiveness
in reducing nausea and vomiting.
Ginger Tonic is also a useful digestive aid that will increase
digestive enzymes and speed up the transit time of food that
is slow.
Ginger also has the ability to inhibit nuclear factor-kB (NF-
kB), cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipooxygenase (LOX) enzymes
and as a result helps reduce pain and inflammation in
arthritic joints. In three placebo-controlled clinical trials for
the treatment of osteoarthritis, ginger rhizome showed
significant efficacy compared to placebo. For pain and
inflammation, ginger can be used as an alternative to NSAIDs
like ibuprofen without the damaging gastrointestinal side
effects that NSAIDs commonly have. Ginger has anti-ulcer
effects and can helps protect the intestinal mucosa from
damage.
Ginger Tonic has a vasodilating action, and will increase

Staying Strong Protein Supplements Slow Muscle Loss,
Improve Strength, in Older Adults
Body builders and athletes have always
believed that protein supplements were an
essential component to their fitness regimen.
Conventional medical wisdom, however,
remains unconvinced. Their position is that
exercise only slightly increases protein
requirements (to rebuild lean muscle tissue),
and that any excess intake over that just goes
to waste.
Athletes know better, and the following
study is one of many that supports their long-
held beliefs. This study also directs our
attention to the question of what type of
protein supplement is best. More on that in a
moment. Here are the details:
Soy-dairy protein blend preserved muscle in
men
In the normal diet, people consume a mix
of proteins, not one isolated type, so doctors
wanted to test the effects of a protein blend
on muscle building. In this study, 20 healthy,
recreationally active men, aged 55 to 75, took
30 grams of a soy-dairy protein blend or the
same amount of whey protein alone, in a
beverage they drank one hour after
performing a set of leg-extension exercises.
The protein blend contained 25 percent
each of soy and whey proteins, plus 50
percent caseinate. Doctors measured muscle
amino acid concentrations before and up to
five hours after exercise and found the soy-
dairy blend delivered amino acids to muscle
tissue, promoted muscle protein synthesis,
and activated a process that leads to muscle
protein turnover. The results were similar for
whey protein alone.
Discussing the findings, doctors said protein
blends, such as soy-dairy, may help
counteract age-related muscle loss in a form
similar to how people consume protein.
(Reference: Journal of Nutrition; October,
2016, Published Online)
I think there are several conclusions we
can draw from this study.
First, supplemental protein can indeed be
of value in the maintenance and building of
muscle tissue.
Second, for most of us, heroic levels of
supplemental protein are not necessary.
Thirty grams of a soy/dairy blend would be
expected to deliver 25 to 27 grams of
protein. The same amount of whey protein
isolate would contain at least 25 grams of
protein. This is about one-half the amount
of high quality protein a normal maile adult
normally requires as a full daily
requirement, or one-third the amount of
lower quality protein. More than that is
probably unnecessary.
Third, the choice of protein need not be
based entirely on protein quality. As long as
you are taking an excess, you are most
likely accomplishing what you need.
And quality is not always as easy to judge
as you might think. Yes, whey protein, egg
protein, casein, etc are high quality. Straight
soy protein, pea protein, wheat protein, etc
are "lower quality." But what does this
mean? It means that you need less of the
higher quality protein than you do the
lower quality protein to accomplish the
same thing in our bodies. This is due to
their more optimal amino acid composition.
But, as stated in the study, our diet rarely
consists of only one source of protein. We
usually ingest a mixture of proteins, and this
increases the overall protein quality. Thus, it
is not surprising that a mixture of proteins,
such as the soy/whey/caseinate used in the
study, turned out to be as effective as the
pure whey protein.
