Dong Quai Root 1:3
A highly regarded, well known Chinese herb
widely used for various menstrual and menopausal
problems.
1 fl oz - Product Code: 57001
Who might benefit from this supplement?
• Women suffering from various menstrual irregularities;
• Women seeking to lessen the symptoms of menopause
(hot flashes, mood swings, irritability)
• Women with premenstrual disorders (PMS) to decrease the
discomfort of cramps, slow onset, dull ache, mood swings,
bloating and irritability).
Ingredients:
Phyto-Tech™ Dong Quai Root 1:3 contains Dong Quai Root,
Alcohol Pure Grain, Water Pure Deionized; 333 mg/ml.
Herbalists consider Dong Quai to be an estrogen synergist. It
sensitizes the binding or absorption sites where estrogen is
absorbed into the body and will increase levels of estrogen. In
menopause where estrogen is decreasing, it helps satisfy the
bodies craving and diminishes symptoms. In PMS, Dong Quai
accentuates the estrogen phase or phase from menses to
ovulation. It is especially indicated for cycles longer than 28
days. It is contraindicated for cycles less than 28 days, which
is estrogen excess (use Chaste Tree Berries here). Dong Quai
will help bring a longer cycle back to a 28-day cycle, help
bring on a crampy slow onset period and possibly help
alleviate a dry vagina.
Contraindications: Pregnancy; Menses that have a cycle
shorter than 28 days.
Dosage:
15-45 drops, 2-3 times per day or as needed in juice or
water.
Complimentary Formulas:

Nutrients Help Ease Symptoms of Depression
A
number of different nutritional, hormonal,
and herbal treatments have been found to
be effective in the treatment of depression. In
many cases, an appropriately chosen "natural"
treatment program produces results that are
as good as, or better than, those achieved
with conventional drug therapy, while causing
fewer adverse side effects. In other cases,
antidepressant medications are clearly more
effective than natural treatments.
"Most nutritional, hormonal, and herbal
treatments for depression have been studied
individually, either by themselves or in
combination with conventional
antidepressants. Combining treatments that
have a similar mechanism of action may
increase both the efficacy and the adverse
effects of the treatments. Examples of such
interactions include L-tryptophan combined
with SSRIs, and Hypericum perforatum (St.
John's wort) combined with some
antidepressant medications. Treatments that
are thought to have different mechanisms of
action, such as thyroid hormone and L-
tryptophan, vitamin B12 and L-tryptophan, or
most dietary modifications in conjunction
with most nutritional supplements, can
presumably be used safely in combination,
and in some cases may be more effective than
either treatment alone."

The following studies support the
effectiveness of nutritional supplements and
the synergy with conventional medical
treatments.
Nutrients Complement
Antidepressant Effects
A high percentage of those who have
depression do not reach remission after one
or two courses of antidepressant medication,
and hundreds of millions currently take these
drugs worldwide. To see if a nutritional
approach might improve results, doctors
reviewed 40 clinical trials that used vitamins
and other nutritional supplements along with
standard antidepressants.
Overall, those treating depression with
antidepressants who added omega-3 fish oil
supplements, SAMe, methylfolate--the
bioactive form of folate--or vitamin D had
better results than those taking
antidepressants alone.
The strongest finding was for omega-3,
which had a statistically significant effect over
placebo.
There were no major safety concerns in
combining antidepressants with nutritional
supplements, and the findings suggest there is
great potential to improve the mental health
of people who respond inadequately to
antidepressants alone, doctors concluded.

Flavonoids Reduce Depression in
Women
In this long-term study of 82,643 women,
age 36 to 80, who began the study without
depression, doctors measured total flavonoids
in the diet every two to four years, and
chances for depression.
Women who consumed the most flavanols,
flavones, and flavanones were 7 to 10 percent
less likely to develop depression over the
course of the study, with those at least age 65
at the start of the study showing the greatest
benefit.
Those who got two or more servings per day
of citrus fruit or juice were 18 percent less
likely to develop depression compared to
women who got less than one serving per
week. Flavones and proanthocyanidins were
most effective in lowering chances for
depression, doctors said.

The Nutrient Curcumin Eased
Symptoms in Major Depression
This new review builds on earlier
antidepressant findings for curcumin.
Doctors reviewed the science through 2015
and identified six placebo-controlled studies
covering 342 people with major depression.
All participants continued to take prescription
antidepressant medication while adding a
placebo or 500 mg or 1,000 mg of curcumin
per day.
After six weeks, those taking 1,000 mg of
curcumin per day reported having fewer
depressive symptoms compared to placebo.
Doctors found a significant improvement in
depressive symptoms in middle-aged, but not
in older, adults. Also, curcumin had the most
significant effect in those who were otherwise
healthy, while those who also had other
health problems saw less significant effects.
Discussing the findings, doctors said that
while the studies were short-term and
involved small numbers of participants, the
study methods and designs were rigorous and
high-quality.
