I cannot help but be most impressed with
those herbs and supplements whose efficacy
is supported by scientific research in addition
to tradition and/or word or mouth or
marketing claims. Both Elderberry and
Pelargonium (Umcka or Umckaloabo) both
fall in this category. Elderberry, however, is
especially effective as a treatment for the flu,
while Pelargonium is thought to be more
effective for the common cold and upper
respiratory infections. The problem is that
many people are unsure, especially in the
early stages, of what they are coming down
with a common cold, or the flu? The solution,
take a combination of the two! What could
be easier and more convenient? A simple

Mushroom Immune Complex

One of the most fascinating and promising

assume the medicinal value of these
mushrooms is due to their beta-glucan

Organic Mushroom Mycelium of: Maitake,

considered more as an adaptogen and the

Immune Complex, be considered primarily
for its effect on the immune system.

What is new and exciting about this
product? There are many products already on
the market that contain glucosamine,
chondroitin and MSM. This product, however,
also contains the herb Devil's Claw.
When I was involved with one of the major
herbal companies in France, I was introduced
to the herb Devil's Claw. It was one of the
most popular herbs in Europe, because of its
anti-inflammatory action. It was featured in
Pharmacies, alongside pharmaceutical
products, as a treatment for arthritis, joint
pain and stiffness, etc. There were published
studies that showed that Devil's Claw was as
effective as popular prescription anti-
inflammatory drugs, without the side effects.
Here are some recent examples. For back
pain, devil's claw seems to lessen nonspecific
low-back pain (4 studies). Some evidence
suggests that an aqueous extract of devil's
claw at doses of 30-100 mg of the
harpagoside constituent daily seems to
decrease low back pain similarly to rofecoxib
(Vioxx) 12.5 mg and other non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs (5 studies).
For osteoarthritis, taking devil's claw alone
or in conjunction with nonsteroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) seems to help
decrease osteoarthritis-related pain (9
studies). Some evidence suggests that devil's
claw is comparable to diacerhein (a slow-
acting drug for osteoarthritis; not available in
the US) for improving osteoarthritis pain in
the hip and knee after 16 weeks of treatment.
Patients taking devil's claw also seem to be
able to decrease use of NSAIDs for pain relief
(2 studies). These studies used a specific
powdered devil's claw root product
containing 2% of the constituent harpagoside
and 3% total iridoid glycosides (2
studies).(Natural Medicines Database).
Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)
extract used medicinally is derived from the
dried tuberous roots of a plant which
originates from the Kalahari and savannah
desert regions of southern and southeastern
Africa. In these areas, devil's claw has
historically been used to treat a wide range of
conditions
