Vitamin E Reduce Chances Of
Pancreatic Csancer
Vitamin E and the pancreas
Earlier studies have found vitamin E pre-
vents some tumors by protecting cells and
DNA from free-radical damage through its
antioxidant effects. Free radicals occur when
polyunsaturated fatty acids react with oxygen
in lipid cell membranes, a process that may
be essential to developing tumors, doctors
said. This review of 10 studies measured vita-
min E in the diets of 2,976 people with pan-
creatic cancer and in 253,431 others with-
out.
Overall, those who got the highest amounts
of vitamin E through diet and supplements
were 19 percent less likely to have devel-
oped pancreatic cancer over the various
study periods.
Vitamin E stimulates superoxide dismutase,
an antioxidant enzyme in every cell of the
body, and may protect against tumors by
boosting the immune response and suppress-
ing the activity of cancer-growth pathways.
Folic Acid, Folate, And Breast
Cancer
Folate is the circulating form of folic acid,
and plays a role in copying and repairing
DNA. In this study, doctors followed 498
postmenopausal women with breast cancer
for 6.7 years. Researchers took into account
the stage of the disease, age at diagnosis,
body mass index, childbirth history, hormone
replacement therapy, alcohol, diet, and folic
acid supplements.
Overall, women with the highest total cir-
culating folate levels were 59 percent less
likely to have died during the study period
compared to women who had the lowest
folate concentrations. Also, women who used
folic acid supplements had significantly high-
er circulating levels of folate than women
who did not take folic acid.

Managing Depression
Some people with major depression do not
respond well to the typical SSRI drug treat-
ment. In this study, 26 men and women,
aged 28 to 70, who had not responded well
to SSRIs took 800 mg or 1,600 mg of SAMe
per day. After 15 weeks, participants on both
doses had an average 35 percent improve-
ment in symptoms. A group of eight who had
not responded to SAMe then took 1,600 mg
of magnesium orotate. After eight weeks,
seven saw significant clinical improvement in
depression symptoms. Doctors believe these
nutrients may help rebalance the gut, where
the body produces much of the neurotrans-
mitter serotonin.
