Ingredients:
Each vegetarian capsule contains Certified Organic Red Yeast
Rice (Monascus purpureus) 600mg, CoQ10 (Ubiquinone)
30mg. The capsule contains Modified Vegetable Cellulose.
Indications:
Red Yeast Rice is produced by fermenting yeast (Monascus
purpureus) over rice. It has a long history of use in Chinese
medicine to lower cholesterol, improve blood circulation,
and help digestion. Studies report that Red Yeast Rice can
lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, total
cholesterol, and triglycerides by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-
CoA reductace, which helps the body make cholesterol. Red
Yeast Rice naturally contains similar compounds (monacolins)
as those contained in statin medications (pharmaceuticals
used to lower cholesterol). The difference is that statins are
synthetically manufactured drugs, whereas the compounds
found in Red Yeast Rice are naturally occurring. Researchers
are uncertain as to whether Red Yeast Rice is effective
because of its natural statin-like compounds or if it is other
constituents in it, such as sterols, isoflavones, and
monounsaturated fatty acids, that are responsible.
It is important to avoid Red Yeast Rice products that may be
low quality and may contain citrinin, a contaminate that can
cause kidney failure and genetic damage to cells. Citrin is
formed when Red Yeast Rice is not fermented properly. In
addition, much of the Red Yeast Rice on the market,
especially imported Red Yeast Rice, is processed with heat,

Nutrients Improve Cognition Scores in Alzheimer’s
Disease and Protect Against Cognitive Decline

I
n one of the first studies to link gut health to
mental function, probiotics improved
cognition scores in those with Alzheimer’s
disease (AD). In this recent study, 52 people
with Alzheimer’s disease took a placebo or a
daily probiotic including L. acidophilus, L.
casei, bifidobacterium bifidum, and L.
fermentum at a concentration of two-billion
colony forming units each.
After 12 weeks, those taking the probiotics
saw significant improvement in standard mini-
mental state exam scores, to 10.6 from 8.7,
on a maximum scale of 30, while the placebo
group declined.
Those in the probiotics group also saw
lower triglycerides, very-low-density
lipoprotein (vLDL) cholesterol, and high-
sensitivity C-reactive protein; an inflammatory
factor. Probiotics also reduced insulin
resistance and insulin-producing cell activity
improved.
While the results were modest and
participants remained severely cognitively
impaired, doctors said the study is important
because it provides evidence that the gut
microbiome plays a role in neurological
function and that probiotics can improve
human cognition. And, or course, there are
other benefits to taking broad spectrum
probiotic supplements as well, including
improved digestion, immunc function, etc.

Vitamins C and E Protect
Cognition
A
t the start of this cognition study, 5,269
older men and women reported what
vitamin supplements they were taking.
Doctors tested cognition then, and twice
more at five-year intervals. About one in six
developed some form of dementia over the
12-year study period.
Comparing those taking vitamins C and E to
those who did not revealed chances for
developing Alzheimer’s disease were 40
percent lower in the vitamin group, 38
percent lower for any kind of dementia, and
23 percent lower for any cognitive
impairment other than dementia. The results
were similar for vitamins C or E separately.
Discussing the findings, doctors said it may
be that these antioxidant vitamins reduce
nerve damage and death due to oxidative
stress, both of which play a role in dementia.

Resveratrol and
Colitis
T
his is the first placebo-controlled trial to
test the effects of resveratrol on oxidative
stress levels in ulcerative colitis (UC), an
inflammatory condition of ulcers or sores in
the lining of the large intestine. While doctors
don’t know the cause, they believe oxidative
stress plays a role.
In this study, 56 people with active mild to
moderate UC took a placebo or 500 mg of
resveratrol per day. After six weeks, levels of
the important antioxidant, superoxide
dismutase (SOD), had decreased for placebo
while increasing for resveratrol. Total
antioxidant capacity and signs of oxidative
stress deteriorated in the placebo group but
improved for resveratrol.
While there were no improvements for
placebo, measurements of disease activity
decreased and quality of life test scores
improved for those taking resveratrol. Doctors
concluded resveratrol can reduce oxidative
stress in those with ulcerative colitis, and
improve quality of life.
