Willner Chemists: The Nutritional Supplement Professionals
Probiotics and Weight Loss
Nutritionists have long known of the benefits
probiotics have on weight loss and weight
management. Although the strain used in
this study seems be particularly effective in
reducing abdominal fat, other strains of
lactobacilli have shown to be effective as
well. Both human and animal studies have
found that normal-weight people have
different gut bacteria than overweight or
obese people. These studies suggest that gut
bacteria may play a powerful role in weight
regulation. There are several main
mechanisms that probiotics may employ to
reduce obesity. It is thought that probiotics
reduce fat by, inhibiting the absorption of
dietary fat, by releasing hormones that
reduce appetite, and by increasing special
proteins that decreases fat storage.
Inflammation also plays a role in fat storage
and probiotics are useful in reducing
inflammation in the body and gut. I’m
inclined to think that any good quality
probiotic formula with multiple strains of
bacteria can be helpful in weight loss,
however Willners carries products that do
contain lactobacillus gasseri. Here are a few:
FloraMend Prime Probiotic
by Thorne Research
30 Vcaps, Product Code: 61196
FitBiotic
by Garden of Life
20 Pak, Product Code: 66480.
Additional Comments
from Sam Forbes, CN.
Lactobacillus gasseri
I
n the lab, obese mice with high blood sugar
levels ate the probiotic lactobacillus gasseri
along with their regular diet while others did
not consume the probiotic. After four weeks,
doctors measured levels of inflammation and
found those that had not consumed
probiotics had inflammation levels 16 percent
higher than those that had consumed
probiotics. Also, those in the probiotics group
had better carbohydrate metabolism and
lower blood sugar levels after three weeks.
