x,
We would have expected these results.
We have promoted the benefits of
flavonoids for many years. When first dis-
covered, bioflavonoids were thought to
be vitamins, and were designated as "vita-
min P," due to their beneficial effect on
capillary permeability.
For this reason, they have long been
recommended for conditions such as
varicose veins, hemorrhoids, etc., and
herbs like butcher's broom and horse
chestnut rich in flavonoids-- have been
used, Instead of pure vitamin C, supple-
ments containing both vitamin C and
bioflavonoids (rutin, hesperidine, etc)
have been recommended. More recently,
the emphasis has shifted to the antioxi-
dant properties of various flavonoids.
Products rich in plant-derived flavonoids
have now become an essential compo-
nent of any balanced supplement regi-
men, as a complement to vitamin and
mineral antiooxidants. My recommenda-
tion in this regard is the two PhytoTech
supplements:
Antiox Phyto Blend Liquid
Product Code: 57551
Antiox Phyto Complex II, Capsules
Product Code: 63745

Men's Health: Flavonoids Reduce chances for
Heart Disease, Erectile Dysfunction
Flavonoid-rich Fruits Lower
CVD
E
arlier studies found antioxidant flavonoids
from fruits reduced chances of
cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women, but
there is little information on flavonoid effects
in men. In this study, doctors measured levels
of fruit-sourced anthocyanins and flavanones
in the diets of 43,880 men and followed up
for 24 years.
Overall, men who got the most flavonoids
from fruits were 13 percent less likely to have
a non-fatal heart attack compared to men
who got the least flavonoids, and were 22
percent less likely to have an ischemic stroke,
where blood supply is reduced to the brain.
In men with normal, not elevated, blood
pressure, those who got the most flavonoids
were 19 percent less likely to have a non-
fatal heart attack. Doctors said that certain
flavonoids-anthocyanins-tended to protect
the heart, and the flavonoids known as
flavanones protected against stroke.

More Flavonoids, less
Erectile Dysfunction
D
octors believe that poor circulation is the
primary cause of erectile dysfunction
(ED), but wanted to know more about the
effects of diet. In this study, doctors measured
the diets of 25,096 men and followed up for
10 years. Over this time, 36 percent of the
men reported developing ED. Those who got
the most flavanones, flavones, and
anthocyanins were on average 10 percent
less likely to develop ED compared to men
who got the least flavonoids. Overall, men
who ate the most fruit were 14 percent less
likely to develop ED compared to men who
ate the least.
