Nutrients Help Preserve Bone
Density In Women: Creatine
And Resistance Training
The body produces creatine, a compound
that helps the body create energy and mus-
cle, also popular as a sports supplement. In
this study, 47 postmenopausal women partic-
ipated in a resistance training program three
days per week while taking 45 mg of creatine
per pound of body weight per day or a
placebo.
After one year, the creatine group had 1.2
percent less bone mineral density while the
placebo group had 3.9 percent less. The
finding is important because bone loss direct-
ly increases chances of fracture. Also, while
the placebo group experienced a 4 percent
decline, women in the creatine group saw
1.4 percent more new bone at the thigh,
decreasing chances for fracture, doctors said.

`Soy Helps Preserve Bone
Soy isoflavones have a mild estrogen-like
effect that may help offset the natural decline
in estrogen during menopause and help pre-
serve bone. To determine bone health, doc-
tors measured the amount of calcium excret-
ed at the start of this study, and after each
50-day study period, testing a standard bone
loss drug or a series of isoflavone doses.
The 24 postmenopausal women in the
study took the prescription osteoporosis drug
risedronate or various doses of soy
isoflavones every 50 days. While women tak-
ing the prescription drug retained the most
calcium in bone, women who took the soy
isoflavones also saw a benefit. The most
effective mixture was a total of 105 mg of the
soy isoflavones genistein, daidzein, and
glycitein in their natural ratios, which
increased calcium retained in bone by 7.6
percent.

Amino Acids Improve Blood
Flow
In the first circulation study to combine
these three amino acids, doctors gave 31
older, independently living men and women
a placebo or a total of 14 grams of arginine,
14 grams of glutamine, and 3 grams of HMB
(hydroxy methylbutyric acid) taken in two
divided doses. After 24 weeks, while the
placebo group had not improved, doctors
measured the ability of vessels to dilate in
response to blood flow and found a 27 per-
cent increase in the amino acid group com-
pared to the start of the study. Also, signs of
inflammation tended to increase for placebo
but remained stable in the amino acid group.
What we do not know, of course, is
whether or not that specific combination of
three amino acids is more effective than ony
one alone. or a combination of any two, etc.
The PubMed abstract did not offer an
explanation as to why they chose that partic-
ular combination.

Ginger Reduces Muscle Pain,
And Speeds Recovery After
Exercise
Earlier studies found ginger relieved muscle
pain as well as non-steroidal anti-inflamma-
tory drugs (NSAIDs), without side effects. In
this pilot study, 20 non-weight-trained men
and women took 4 grams of ginger powder
per day, or a placebo, five days before an
exercise test that would cause muscle dam-
age.
A day after the test, both the placebo and
ginger groups were able to lift less maximum
weight in one repetition than during the test.
After 48 hours, while there was no effect on
pain, the ginger group could lift more weight
than placebo. After the third and fourth days,
the placebo group was able to lift more
weight than the ginger group.
Discussing the findings, doctors said ginger
may help athletes who need to compete in
events that require frequent repeated maxi-
mum effort, but suggest further study to
determine the dosage of ginger that will sus-
tain recovery over a longer period.
