Improve Health During And
After Hospital Stays
Correcting nutrient deficiencies may
save lives
Older adults are often malnourished and
nutritional supplements can help preserve
health in and out of the hospital. In this
review of 14 studies of older people admit-
ted to hospitals, those taking standard oral
nutritional supplements while there had bet-
ter health outcomes.
In five of the studies, those who took liquid
or semi-solid multivitamins/minerals were 35
percent less likely to die in the hospital com-
pared to those who did not take supple-
ments. Seven of the studies found that those
who had taken supplements while in the
hospital were 35 percent less likely to have
complications after coming home. And in
another group of five studies, hospital stays
were about two days shorter for those who
took standard oral nutritional supplements
compared to those who did not take supple-
ments.
