James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

Fenugreek extract boosts libido
in women
New clinical trial finds effects in placebo
and nutrient groups
This study followed 80 menstruating
women, aged 20 to 49, who
reported low sex drive, and who
took 600 mg of fenugreek seed extract pro-
viding 300 mg of fenusides per day, or a
placebo. After eight weeks, and two menstru-
al cycles, women in the fenugreek group had
measurably higher levels of the hormones
estradiol and free testosterone.
Compared to placebo, women taking fenu-
greek reported a greater increase in sexual
desire and arousal, as well as in sexual activi-
ty. To a lesser extent, women in the placebo
group also reported improvements in these
three areas, which doctors had expected
because all the women had expressed an
interest in improving their sex lives as they
entered the study.
Discussing the findings, doctors said estra-
diol stimulates vaginal lubrication and blood
flow, positively affecting a woman’s capacity
for sexual arousal and orgasm, and that the
study results appear to support this beneficial
effect in women.

Fenugreek 1:3
Fenugreek has been used to aid digestion, and as a general tonic. Recent interest has focused on its
apparent hypoglycemic actions.
Who might benefit by taking this herb? Those with Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, artherosclerosis,
high triglycerides and digestive problems.
According to Nutrition Focus, "Fenugreek seeds contain alkaloids (mainly trigonelline) and protein high
in lysine and L-tryptophan. Its steroidal saponins (diosgenin, yamogenin, tigogenin, and neotigogenin) and
mucilaginous fiber are thought to account for many of the beneficial effects of fenugreek. The steroidal
saponins are thought to inhibit cholesterol absorption and synthesis, while the fiber may help lower blood
sugar levels. One human study found that fenugreek can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels in
people with moderate atherosclerosis and non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes. Preliminary and dou-
ble-blind trials have found that fenugreek helps improve blood sugar control in patients with insulin-
dependent (type 1) and non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes. Double-blind trials have shown that
fenugreek lowers elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, This has also been found in a
controlled clinical trial with diabetic patients with elevated cholesterol. Generally, fenugreek does not
lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels.
Fenugreek is commonly used as a food, spice and source of dietary fiber throughout the world.
Dosage: As a tincture, up to 30-60 drops can te taken up to three times per day, in water or juice.
Caution: Do not use during pregnancy. Keep out of the reach of children.

Melatonin Improves Sleep
Melatonin tested in simulated
hospital environment.
It can be hard to sleep in a hospital inten-
sive care unit (ICU) because overnight noise
and light suppress the natural release of
melatonin, the sleep hormone. In this study,
doctors simulated an ICU room and gave 40

healthy people no treatment, a placebo, 1
mg of oral melatonin at 9:00 p.m. for four
nights, or simply access to earplugs and eye
masks.
While the earplugs and eye masks were
better than no treatment or placebo, those
who took melatonin saw the biggest
improvement in sleep quality, more complete
phases of rapid-eye movement and non-
rapid-eye movement sleep, and elevated
melatonin levels.
