However, it may help alleviate anxiety symptoms such as heart pal-

James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

Vitamin E: New Studies Support
Brain And Bone Benefits In
Young And Old
More Vitamin E, Higher Iq In Children
Infants with extremely low birth weight—
less than 2 pounds, 3 ounces—are usually
born at 27 weeks gestational age or earlier,
and are more susceptible to complications
and impaired mental development.
In this study, researchers divided 259
school age kids born at extremely low birth
weights into three groups based on how long
they were given vitamin E supplements as
infants; less than six months, more than six
months, or no vitamin E supplements.
Compared to no vitamin E and short-term
vitamin E, kids who got vitamin E for six
months or more had the lowest incidence
of mental impairment and better IQ test
performance.

More Vitamin E, Fewer Fractures In
Older Adults
Bone fracture and osteoporosis may
increase along with chronic oxidative stress,
and vitamin E has antioxidant properties
which may counteract this type of bone
damage. To test the theory, doctors in this
study followed 14,738 older women for 19
years, and 1,138 older men for 12 years.
For women, those who got the least alpha
tocopherol vitamin E in the diet were 86 per-
cent more likely to have had a hip fracture
over the 19-year follow-up period, while
women who took alpha tocopherol supple-
ments were 22 percent less likely.
For men, those with low circulating levels
of alpha tocopherol vitamin E were more
than three times as likely to have had a hip
fracture over the 12-year follow up period
compared to men with higher levels of vita-
min E.

Healthy Bones and Joints
Nutrients help reduce chances for
hip fracture and slow the progression
of osteoarthritis of the knee, two new
studies show
More Vitamin E, Less Hip Fracture
Doctors in this study measured vitamin E
levels in 1,160 men and women, aged 65 to
79, who had had a hip fracture during an
11-year study follow-up period, and com-
pared them to 1,434 men and women who
participated in the same health study but
who had not had a hip fracture during this
time.
Compared to those with the lowest levels,
those with the highest circulating vitamin E
levels were 34 percent less likely to have had
a hip fracture. Researchers also saw a linear
relationship: as levels of circulating vitamin E
increased, chances for hip fracture
decreased.

Low Vitamin D Levels Raise Chances
For Osteoarthritis
In this study, doctors measured vitamin D
levels in 418 people with osteoarthritis (OA)
in one or both knees, and tracked joint-space
narrowing—a sign of the progress of
osteoarthritis as the joints lose their protec-
tive cartilage—over two to four years of fol-
low-up.
The average vitamin D level for all partici-
pants was 26.2 nanograms per milliliter of
blood (ng/mL). Those whose vitamin D levels
fell below 15 ng/mL were twice as likely to
see osteoarthritis worsen over the follow-up
period compared to those with higher vita-
min D levels. Doctors consider vitamin D lev-
els below 20 ng/mL as insufficient, and levels
from 20 to 60 ng/mL as optimal.
