Dr. Podell: Perhaps more to the
point, they continue on with this
comment: "And outweighing any
potential benefits, experts say, are
the detrimental effects of fat, sugar
and calories. With two out of three
adults and half of children either
overweight or obese, ‘We do not
need a license to eat more choco-
late,' says Ross A. Hammond, a sen-
ior fellow at the Brookings
Institution, who estimates that the
annual costs from obesity may run to
$215 billion a year."
Here is what you have to keep in
mind. Research has shown that
cocoa is indeed rich in potent
antioxidants called flavanols, or cate-
chins, which are known to reduce
the risks of many chronic illnesses.
Many feel they may exert anti-aging
properties. But chocolate is not
cocoa. Chocolate contains cocoa,
but it also is loaded with saturated
fat, sugar and calories. Some of the
things we call chocolate, such as
"white chocolate," don't contain
cocoa at all.
Don: So how do we get the benefit
of the antioxidants of cocoa? Well, if
you insist on eating chocolate–and I
don't think that is such a bad thing,
in moderation–stick with the dark
chocolate, the kind with the high
cocoa content.
The other thing you can do, now, is
buy cocoa as a nutritional supple-
ment.
Sam: That's right. Some are actually
calling cocoa a "superfruit," right
alongside acai, pomegranate, blue-
berry, etc. And cocoa is now being
