Healthy Candy?
Cocoa may be good for you,
but watch out for marketing
tricks.
The following is an excerpt from The
Willner Window radio program. This
segment was originally broadcast on July
31, 2011. The Willner Window can be
heard every Sunday, on WOR (710 AM,
in NY), or WGKA (920 AM, in Atlanta).

Don: There was an interesting arti-
cle in The Wall Street Journal last
week, titled "10 Things Candy
Makers Won't Tell You." I found a
few of the items of interest. One
dealt with some new products that
have been introduced by some
major candy manufacturers. At first
glance, you might be attempted to
applaud these efforts, as they are
"low calorie" candy bars. That's
great–a lower calorie candy bar. I
wonder how they do it?
Sam: Yes, Don, how do they do it?
Have they come up with a new type
of cocoa bean, or some sort of sugar
or fat substitute ingredients? Well,
no. It turns out that all they did was
reduce the size of the candy bar!
And, to add insult to injury, the
author of the article points out that
while they cut the portion size, they
did not cut the price! I quote: "The
Mars Truffle Crisp bar and its regular
3 Musketeers bar, for example, each
cost $1, but at 1.1 ounces, the
lower-calorie bar is half the size of
the more caloric treat."
Dr. Podell: So, in
other words, if
you are a health-
conscious candy
buyer, you are
paying pro-
portionally
more for less candy. I guess it is one
more example of "buyer beware."
You can accomplish the same thing
by buying a regular candy bar, and
cutting it in half.
Don: There were a few other items
in the article that were of interest as
well. For one thing, they commented
on how pleased the candy compa-
nies are to talk about the healthy
properties of chocolate. According to
the article, on the Hershey website,
for example, the company says that
chocolate "may contribute to
improved cardiovascular health" cit-
ing the antioxidant properties of
cocoa.
Sam: Well, as many of you no
doubt know by now, there is indeed
a connection between these antioxi-
dants, known as flavanols, and
reduced risk of heart disease, cancer
and other diseases.
The authors of the article then rush
to condemn this, claiming that it is
wrong to imply that this type of
research automatically means you
can consider chocolate candy in the
same category as fruits and vegeta-
