suggests that supplementation of
antioxidant vitamins might possibly
reduce cancer and all-cause mortali-
ty."
Another recent study, dealt with the
risk of cervical neoplasm. Out of
Korea, this meta-analysis of 22 case-
control studies involving a total of
10,073 subjects, resulted in the fol-
lowing conclusion: "The findings of
this meta-analysis indicate that over-
all, there were preventive effects of
vitamin or antioxidant intake on cer-
vical neoplasms in case-control stud-
ies.
Sam: In a study involving 4,447
French subjects between the ages of
45 and 60 years, who had previously
participated in a randomized, dou-
ble-blind, placebo-controlled study
in which they received daily supple-
mentation with vitamin C, beta-
carotene, vitamin E, selenium, and
zinc, or a placebo, cognitive per-
formance assessments revealed that
subjects who received antioxidant
supplementation had better episodic
memory scores, specifically verbal
memory and executive functioning.

ing loss and antioxidant levels.
Dr. Podell: The study Don is refer-
ring to was published in The Journal
of Nutrition, Health & Aging. It was
from Australia, and they found that
increased intake of antioxidant vita-
mins seemed to significantly reduce
the risk of hearing loss.
They found that people with the
highest average intakes of vitamin A
had a 47 percent reduced risk of
moderate or greater hearing loss,
compared to people with the lowest
average intakes. In addition, higher
dietary vitamin E intakes were linked
with a 14 percent reduction in hear-
ing loss.
The researchers, explained that
reactive oxygen species, or free radi-
cals, may damage the inner portion
of the ear associated with hearing.
They speculate, therefore, that
antioxidants may counter this dam-
age and reduce age-related hearing
loss.
Sam: There are many other exam-
ples of recent research on the health
benefits of antioxidants.
In a review published in Cancer
Causes Control, data from 51 studies
was analyzed, examining the rela-
tionships between intakes of retinol,
vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E
on risk of breast cancer. They found
that the risk of breast cancer was
reduced by 17% in those with the
highest vitamin A intake.
In another study, recently published
in the European Journal of Nutrition,
baseline users of antioxidant vitamin
supplements were found to have a
significantly reduced risk of cancer
mortality and all-cause mortality.
Dr. Podell: Now this was a
prospective study involving data col-
lected from 23,943 subjects without
pre-existing cancer and myocardial
infarction/stroke at baseline. They
were followed for an average of 11
years, during which time 1,101
deaths were documented (cancer
deaths=513; cardiovascular
deaths=264). So we are looking at
big numbers, and a significant period
of time. As Sam said, the results
were impressive. Their conclusion
was "Based on limited numbers of
users and cases, this cohort study
