A Guide to Immune Enhancing
Herbal Supplements
W
hether it is simple issues, such as
colds and flu, to more complex
problems like allergies, auto-
immune disease and cancer, a properly
functioning immune system is of paramount
importance.
There are many things we can do. We can
try to avoid exposure to pathogens. We can
eat healthy, avoid temperature extremes and
too much stress. But these measures, and
others, often fall short. Some of us get colds
and/or the flu every season, for example,
while others seem to have an inherent
resistance.
Our immune system protects us from these
problems when working properly. Repeated,
or chronic infections, including mild cases of
colds and flu, can be signs of a weakened or
compromised immune system.
Equally concerning is an immune system
that runs out of control, attacking our own
cells as if they are the enemy. We call this
“auto-immune” disease, and an example is
rheumatoid arthritis.
To address this problem, we look to herbal
supplements and other measures that exert
“immune-modulating” actions rather than
“immune-enhancing” action. Adaptogenic
herbs fall in this category.
In this short article, I am going to list some
of my favorite “herbal remedies” for
enhancing and modulating immune function.
Choosing herbal supplements, when so many
choices are available, can be daunting. I will
break them down into categories, such as
“prevention,” “treatment,” and specific health
conditions. (Please note that my use of the
terms “prevention” and “treatment” are not
intended to imply medical actions. Only
drugs, as per the FDA regulations, can be said
to cure, treat, prevent or otherwise mitigate
disease. I am using the terms only to clarify
the nature of their effect on the immune
system).
I will provide several choices, when
appropriate, and you choose the supplements
that seem best for you. In general, I will list
combi-nation products first, and then single
herbs afterwards. For more in- formation on
