V
itamin D has been shown to be an
important factor in alleviating or
preventing various types of allergy conditions.
Here are two recent studies that provide
examples of this, including the importance of
starting vitamin D supplementation during
childhood.
Vitamin D Eases Symptoms of Eczema
Recent studies suggest vitamin D plays a
role in the skin condition atopic dermatitis
(AD), or eczema. Doctors reviewed the
research database for all eczema (AD) studies
through May, 2015, and found that, overall,
those with atopic dermatitis (AD) are more
likely to have low levels of vitamin D, and
that supplements can help.
On average for all age groups, those with
atopic dermatitis (AD) had vitamin D levels
that were 2.03 nanograms per milliliter of
blood (ng/mL) lower than those without AD.
Children with AD had even lower vitamin D
levels: 3.03 ng/mL lower than healthy kids.
The studies also suggested that adding vitamin
D supplements reduced AD symptoms in all
groups.
Doctors don't know what causes eczema,
but many people with the condition also have
a family history of allergy or asthma.

Adequate Vitamin D Means Less Asthma in
Youngsters
Being deficient in vitamin D may increase
chances for asthma, but earlier research was
inconclusive. In this 10-year follow-up study,
doctors tracked children from birth through
age 10.
Overall, children who were often deficient
in vitamin D in early childhood were more
likely to have asthma, allergy, and eczema at
age 10. During the first few years, kids with
low vitamin D levels were more likely to have
allergic immune responses. At six months,
kids who were deficient in vitamin D were
more likely to have harmful bacteria in the
upper airways, and were more susceptible to
lower respiratory infection, both of which
increase chances for asthma. This is the first
study to track vitamin D deficiency from birth
to the onset of asthma, and suggests a clear
link.

Immunology; October, 2016, Published

Vitamin D Reduces Skin Rash and
Chances for Asthma
These studies highlight the importance
of making sure children get optimal
nutrition, both through diet and
nutritional supplementation. Many types
of children's vitamin supplements are
available.
