California Poppy 1:3
California poppy has been used as a sedative to
relieve insomnia and nervousness.
1 fl oz - Product Code: 57643
In an article by Abascal K, Yarnell E.,
Nervine herbs for
treating anxiety (Altern Compliment Ther. 2004
December:309-315.)
, the authors discussed California poppy.
They first pointed out that “anxiety disorders are common in
many Western countries, and conventional drugs like
benzodiazepines are often prescribed to relieve anxiety.
However, these drugs have worrisome short-term and long-
term side effects. Nervine herbs (herbs that quiet nervous
excitement) have a long history of traditional use in relieving
anxiety, insomnia, and mild depression. With the exception
of St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), kava (Piper
methysticum), and valerian (Valeriana officinalis), there is little
published research on the safety and efficacy of nervine
herbs. The purpose of this article was to review the available
research and explain how the lesser-known nervine herbs are
commonly used in practice.” One of those “lesser-known
nervine herbs” was California poppy. They made the
following observation: “California poppy (Eschscholzia
californica) is used for its mild analgesic and calming effects.
Unlike the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), it has no
narcotic effects. Animal studies indicate California poppy tea
reduces anxiety, acts as a mild analgesic, and helps prevent
drug-induced memory loss. Most herbal practitioners
combine lower doses of California poppy with other nervines
to relieve anxiety. Researchers studied a combination of
California poppy, hawthorn flower (Crataegus laevigata), and
magnesium in 264 people with mild to moderate anxiety.
Those taking the herb mixture had significantly improved
anxiety symptoms after three months compared to those
taking placebo. Hawthorn is primarily used for heart
conditions and is not usually considered a nervine. However,
it may help alleviate anxiety symptoms such as heart
palpitations and increased blood pressure. “

Product Reference Guide: Willner Chemists Phyto-Tech™ Herbal Supplements
Muscles lose their mass and strength with
age, in a condition called sarcopenia. Doctors
analyzed 12 studies on nutrient
supplementation and found that essential
amino acid supplements including 2.5 grams
of leucine and hydroxymethylbutyric acid
(HMB) generally improved muscle mass and
strength after three months, and prevented
muscle loss.
(Reference: Age and Ageing; 2014, Vol. 43,
No. 6, 748-59)
Why did the research look specifically at
amino acid blends with extra leucine and
HMB?
Leucine is an essential amino acid and
together with isoleucine and valine are known
as the branched chain amino acids, or
BCAAs. These branched chain amino acids
(BCAAs) make up a large component of
muscle tissue and comprise almost 50% of
dietary protein.
Popular with athletes and body builders,
BCAAs are taken supplementally to help
replace lost body stores of protein during high
intensity exercise, helping with fatigue and
recovery. Clinically, BCAAs are taken to
enhance healint, for conditions of protein loss
due to trauma, surgery, infection, stress, as
well as for people with low dietary protein.
Leucine seems to be the major player here;
regulating protein metabolism and increasing
muscle synthesis while inhibiting muscle
breakdown. A metabolite of leucine called
beta-Hydroxy beta-Methylbutyrate or HMB,
appears to be significantly more potent at
preventing muscle protein breakdown but not
as effective at inducing muscle protein
synthesis. So it makes sense to combine the
anabolic effects of leucine with an anti-
catabolic like HMB for wasting conditions
associated with chronic diseases such as
cancer and heart disease. Sarcopenia is the
degenerative loss of skeletal muscle
associated with aging.
