and E. These catechins include four major polyphenols
including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate
(ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin (EC). Of these
compounds EGCG is the most abundant in green tea and
has generated the most interest. Peer?reviewed scientific
research has consistently shown that EGCG is a potent
antioxidant, deactivating health-damaging free-radicals. By
virtue of its antioxidant effects EGCG has been shown to
exert a number of beneficial activities, such as reducing
inflammation, and normalizing cell and tissue functions. In
promoting cardiovascular health EGCG has been shown to
inhibit free-radical activity in the arteries, improving coronary
circulation. Other studies have shown that ECGC has a bene-
fit in normalizing blood glucose and protecting the pancreas
from oxidative damage, as well as in boosting metabolism
and burning fat. Green tea catechins and ECGC in particular
have also been shown to naturally support detoxification and
the elimination of toxic substances from the body while pro-
tecting the liver.
Grape skin and grape seed extracts are anti-inflammatory
and radioprotective. They are abundant in a group of
polyphenols called procyanidins. Procyanidins are strong
antioxidants, lipid peroxidation inhibitors, and free radical
scavengers. Procyanidins have antimutagenic effects, mean-
ing they can counteract environmental mutagens, which are
thought to be one of the causes of chronic degenerative dis-
eases. Procyanidins also increase circulation making them
helpful for conditions such as venous insufficiency (a condi-
tion in which the veins have trouble sending blood from the
legs back to the heart). A placebo controlled study showed
that treatment with procyanidins improved venous function-
ality and reduced pain, cramps, edema and paresthesias (tin-
gling). Due to procyanidins positive effects on circulation,
grape skin and seed extracts are helpful for numerous vision
disorders. Studies show treatment with procyanidins from the
extracts increase resistance to glare, decrease ocular stress
from prolonged activity at a computer and improve contrast
sensitivity, retinal function and sensitivity in myopia (near-
sightedness).

Arnica Oil 1:6 Topical
A popular first-aid remedy for trauma, injuries.
1 fl oz - Prod Code: 57082
Arnica is the pre-eminent remedy for trauma, injuries, and
accidents and is a common part of first aid kits and home
medicine cabinets. This topical oil is massaged into painful
tissue that has been traumatized from an accident, athletic
event and overexertion. Massage Therapists and
Chiropractors commonly use arnica oil on muscle and joints
that are problematic in order to disburse congested fluids in
a painful area.
It is thought that Arnica works as a fluid transport stimulating
herb. It moves interstitual fluids through ischemic tissue.
Ischemic tissue is tissue that has diminished oxygen content
because of restricted blood and fluid flow. This action by
Arnica on the painful tissue helps it heal and stop the pain
cycle. As a result of the increased circulation, cellular waste
is removed, bruises clear up, pain diminishes, tissue heals,
tissue oxygenates and recovery time is significantly reduced.
Athletes find arnica reduces potential for injury, reduces
recovery time from injury and bruising.
Arnica Topical Oil is great for the daily bumps and bruises
inevitable in life and especially childhood. It is safe for kids.
Phyto-Tech™ Arnica Oil 1:6 Topical contains the following:
Arnica montana Flowers (Wild Harvested), Sage Essential Oil,
Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil,
Note: First extracted in alcohol and oil to maximize potency,
then the alcohol is removed.

Folate Aids Cognition in Young Adults
and Children
Expecting mothers are routinely advised
by their doctors to take a prenatal vitamin
supplement containing folic acid. As the
article indicates, folate (or folic acid) insures
proper development of the neural tube, a
structure from which the brain and spinal
cord form in the fetus. It should be noted
that folic acid intake is important before
and after conception to insure prevention
of birth defects as well as normal cognitive
development.
Folate, one of the B vitamins usually sup-
plemented in the folic acid form, is
involved in regulating DNA replication,
proper brain development and along with
B12 and B6, reduces homocysteine, a risk
factor for Alzheimer’s, heart disease and
stroke. Signs of folate deficiency include
elevated homocysteine, depression and
dementia. Supplementation is typically 400
mcg to 1000 mcg, (or 1 mg folic acid), but
most multivitamin supplements contain 400
mcg to 800 mcg folic acid so additional
supplementation may not be necessary. If
you do take high doses of folic acid, take
additional B12. The reason is if there is a
B12 deficiency, folic acid will mask it on a
blood test. This can be a serious condition
made worse by folic acid supplementation.
Other nutrients vital during pregnancy is
DHA from fish oil and iron. As always, see
your doctor and…Congratulations!
Additional Comments from Sam Forbes, CN.
D
octors know that folate prevents neural
tube defects that can occur in early
pregnancy but know little about the long-term
effects of low folate on how a child may
develop later in life.
In this study, doctors performed a brain
scan on 256 Dutch children between the ages
of 6 and 8. Mothers of 62 of the children had
folate levels that fell below 8 nanomoles per
liter of blood—the minimum normal level—in
early pregnancy. Children of mothers whose
folate levels were low during early pregnancy
were more likely to perform poorly on
cognitive tests for language and had less
accurate visual and spatial perception. By the
age of six, children of mothers with low folate
levels also had smaller total brain volume
compared to children whose mothers had
adequate folate levels during pregnancy.

Studies Show Better Diets Improved
Physical and Mental Health
In another study of the Alternative Healthy
Eating Index, doctors measured the diets of
3,363 participants and assessed their mental
health. Compared to men and women who
ate a less-healthy diet, those eating a healthier
diet were 49 percent less likely to have clini-
cal anxiety, and 45 percent less likely to expe-
rience depression. The benefits were even
greater for those age 40 or younger. Younger
men and women with better diets were 58
percent less likely to have anxiety and 51 per-
cent less likely to develop depression.
Doctors said the B-complex vitamins,
antioxidants, and omega-3s were the parts of
the diet most likely to provide these mental
health benefits.

I
n The Alternative Healthy Eating Index
measures 11 food groups in the diet,
including fruits, vegetables, whole grains,
nuts, legumes, omega-3s, alcohol, juice,
sugar-sweetened drinks, red and processed
meats, trans-fat, and sodium. Few studies
have looked at diet quality and physical
function. In this study, doctors followed
54,762 women for at least 20 years,
comparing diets to physical function. Women
who consumed the most fruits and
vegetables, a moderate amount of alcohol,
and lower levels of sugar-sweetened drinks,
trans-fats, and sodium were most likely to
maintain healthy physical function. The foods
with the most benefit were oranges and
orange juice, apples, pears, romaine and leaf-
lettuce, and walnuts.
Each individual food was not as important
to good physical health as was the overall diet
pattern, with the healthier diets linked to
better physical performance. Doctors said,
“We think a lot about chronic diseases,
cancer, and heart ailments, and tend not to
think of physical function. But being able to
dress yourself and walk around the block
increases your ability to live independently
longer.”
