Willner Chemists: The Nutritional Supplement Professionals
Special Note:
Most Arnica on the market is “Mexican”
Arnica. This is commonly Heterothica inuloides, an adulter-
ant and is not true Arnica. The Vitality Works Arnica prod-
ucts are made from the true European Arnica montana.
Cautions: Do not apply to open wounds, ulcerations or on
areas prone to bleeding; Do not take internally; Discontinue
use if very sensitive skin results in a rash.
Complimentary Formulas and Single Herbs:
•Phyto-Tech™ MuscleGesic, an oral formula for muscle and
general body pain, inflammation
•Phyto-Tech™ Comfrey Root 1:3 (to promote healing of
breaks, fractures, sprains, cuts, lesions)
•Phyto-Tech™ Valerian Root 1:2 (for severe pain)
•Phyto-Tech™ St. John’s Wort 1:2 (if nerves are very sensitive
or painful)
Dosage:
Massage into effected areas as needed. Repeat 2-3
times per day or as needed.
Arnica works best if applied in full concentration to the prob-
lematic area. It is less effective if applied all over the body as
massage oil. Use a different oil for a massage (i.e. almond oil)
and arnica on the painful area.
Ashwagandha Root
Known as “Ayurvedic Ginseng,” Ashwagandha
supports stamina, endurance, and energy.
Ashwagandha Root 1:1.5 - 1 fl oz ~ Prod Code: 57008
Who would benefit from this supplement?
•Those suffering from fatigue, stress, immune system prob-
lems, chronic fatigue syndrome, recovery from illness and
auto-immune disorders.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb, similar to ginseng, but
it is less heating, “yang” or simulating than Panax ginseng.
Ashwagandha is known as the “Ayurvedic” Ginseng. It is
indicated for the same types of conditions as Ginseng, but
Ashwagandha is not heating, Yang or stimulating like Ginseng
(Panax varieties). It is used preventatively for those who have
difficulty replenishing the energy they expend, and want to
avoid burn out. Burnout from unrelenting stress can take the
form of immune breakdown (colds, flu), headaches, irritable
bowel, blood sugar swings and any other genetic, predisposi-
tional or constitutional weakness. Ashwagandha gives addi-
tional life force or Chi to help adapt to the stresses at hand.
It can also be used as a restorative for those who have
already burned out. Ashwagandha, as part of a rejuvenation
treatment plan is effective in chronic fatigue syndrome,
depression, debility, recovery from wasting diseases,
chemotherapy and helps while one is in emotional recovery
therapy.
Ashwagandha is also indicated specifically in autoimmune
disorders. It helps immunity to self modulate. It also has an
affinity to help chronic neuro-muscular disorders such as
fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis (MS).
Phyto-Tech™ Ashwagandha Root contains the following:
Fresh Ashwaganda Root (Withania somnifera), Grain Alcohol,
Deionized Water. It is certified organic.
Dosage:
30-60 drops, 2-3 times per day or as needed in
juice or water.
Complimentary Formulas:
•Phyto-Tech™ Adaptogen Complex
•Phyto-Tech™ Ginseng Energy Blend.
Astragalus Root
As a long term tonic, Astragalus helps boost deep
immunity and resistance.
Astragalus Root 1:3 - 1 fl oz ~ Prod Code: 56949
Astragalus Root, 460 mg - 90 Veggie Caps
Prod Code: 60340
Who would benefit from this supplement?
•Those who get sick easily or suffer from chronic health
problems. It is especially useful for those undergoing
chemotherapy.
“You may already be accustomed to taking echinacea at the
first sign of a cold or flu, or when people around you are get-
ting sick. How is astragalus different? Like echinacea,
Astragalus not only helps prevent colds and flu but shortens
the course of a bug once it has set in. Astragalus can also be
used as a long-term preventive and restorative herb, both to
prevent illness and to renew energy and vitality once an
acute illness hs passed. Scientific evidence salso suggests that
astragalus may be one of the most important herbs for
strengthening the immune system against serious diseases,
including cancer.” (McCaleb, Robert, et al,
The Encyclopedia
of Popular Herbs
, The Herb Research Foundation, Prima
Health, 2000)
The indications listed for Astragalus include the following:
colds and flu, chronic respiratory problems such as bronchi-
tis, digestive ailments, susceptibility to infectious disease,
recovery after illness, general weakness and fatigue, cancer.
The active constituents include polysaccharides (glucans),
saponins (astragalosides), flavonoids and phytosterols, all of
which contribute to the positive actions of Astragalus. It
increases the number of stem cells in bone marrow and
lymph tissue and encourages their development into active
immune cells. It appears to help trigger immune cells from a
"resting" state into heightened activity. One study showed
Astragalus root helps promote and maintain respiratory
health. It also enhances the body's production of
immunoglobulin and stimulates macrophages. Astragalus can
help activate T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Astragalus
stimulated NK-cell activity of human peripheral blood lym-
phocytes and restored steroid-inhibited NK-cell activity in
another study.
Traditionally, many herbalists feel Astragalus is best used
when not acute. In other words, use it in between acute
episodes in order to boost immunity and avoid frequent
acute episodes. Astragalus is indicated for those who get sick
frequently, for illnesses that do not resolve in a reasonable
time, for those who get sick time after time. It is also indicat-

Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory Diets Reduce Risk
for Prostate, Breast and Other Cancers
This study is especially interesting because there has
been some talk among skeptics that high levels of
antioxidants may not be as beneficial as we once
thought. Studies like this, however, continue to sup-
port the health benefits and therapeutic value of high
antioxidant levels—both from the diet and from sup-
plements. For those who find it difficult to ingest high
level of fruits and vegetables, rich in phytoantioxi-
dants, supplements such as Phyto-Tech Antioxidant
Blend, capsules or liquid provide a good alternative.

Antioxidant Levels
M
en with prostate cancer often have low levels of
dietary antioxidants and increased lipid
peroxidation,” doctors said. In a recent study, researchers
measured total antioxidant capacity (TAC)—including
from diet and supplements—and compared that to how
aggressive prostate cancer was in 855 Black Americans
and 945 White Americans with low, intermediate, or
highly aggressive prostate cancer.
Doctors found a direct link between antioxidant levels
and prostate cancer: the lower the TAC level, the more
aggressive the prostate cancer, with no significant
differences between Black and White men. On average
overall, men with the highest TAC levels were 69 percent
less likely to have developed highly aggressive prostate
cancer compared to those with the lowest total
antioxidant capacity from diet and supplements.

We should remember that inflamma-
tion is a normal process in response to
tissue injury or infection. Without inflam-
mation, we wouldn't know something is
wrong. The objective of inflammation is
to resolve injury or infection and return
the body to a state of homeostasis. But
things can go awry when inflammation
continues unabated and becomes chron-
ic. So how can we insure this process
proceeds quickly and efficiently?
As this article shows a diet consisting of
low inflammatory foods and eliminating
pro-inflammatory foods is a good start.
But supplements can also help. Omega
III fatty acids, specifically EPA-DHA, play
an important role in regulating inflamma-
tion. Research shows that omega III fats
stimulate special cell signaling metabo-
lites called lipoxins, protectins, and
resolvins. These metabolites switch cellu-
lar mechanisms from promoting inflam-
mation to stopping inflammation.
There are numerous herbs that help
with inflammation, but the two of the
top choices are turmeric and boswellia in
the standardized extract form. Both of
these herbs inhibit the pro-inflammatory
enzymes cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and
5-lipoxygenase. Hops extract containing
Iso-alpha acids, is another herb that has
been shown in studies to prevent inflam-
mation by selectively inhibiting the NF-
!
B pathway. Resveratrol, popular as a
anti aging supplement, suppresses plas-
ma concentration of tumor necrosis fac-
tor-
"
, interleukin 6, and C-reactive pro-
tein after 6 weeks in healthy humans.
The proteolytic enzymes bromelain,
serrapeptase, and Wobenzyme are well
known anti-inflammatorys. Wobenzyme
is a specially formulated proteolytic
enzyme formula for systemic anti-inflam-
matory activity containing pancreatin,
papain, bromelain, trypsin, chy-
motrypsin.
For convenience and efficacy, manufac-
turers have formulated products that
combine many of these natural com-
pounds. Here’s a quick list:

Anti-Inflammatory Diets
C
hronic inflammation is a factor in
developing cancer, and diets can
promote or discourage inflammation. To
measure the inflammatory tendencies of
different diets, doctors have developed
the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII),
using 36 food variables. Anti-
inflammatory foods include fruits,
vegetables, omega-3, and fiber, while
pro-inflammatory foods include omega-
6, refined sugars, and highly processed
foods, among others.
In this study, 6,542 healthy-weight to
overweight men and women, average
age 49, completed at least six dietary
surveys during the first two years, with
doctors following up for an average of
10 more years. Overall, doctors found a
link between pro-inflammatory diets and
greater chances of developing prostate
cancer, but no link to other cancers.
When doctors viewed the DII by levels
of alcohol in the diet, while there was
no cancer link in higher consumers of
alcohol with pro-inflammatory diets,
those with pro-inflammatory diets who
consumed low to moderate amounts of
alcohol were more likely to develop any
type of cancer or breast cancer.
