Nutrients--Omega-3’s and
Arginine--improve performance
in elite athletes
Omega-3s boost elite cyclists
In this study, 13 elite cyclists took 1,300 mg
of omega-3 fish oil per day or a placebo.
After three weeks, while there were limited
improvements for placebo, cyclists taking the
omega-3s saw a 69 percent increase in nitric
oxide, which helps widen and relax blood
vessels, a 5.25 percent increase in a measure
of blood flow, and a meaningful increase in
the capacity to use oxygen.
Discussing the findings, doctors said that
while the study didn’t directly measure
changes in athletic performance, the results
suggest that omega-3s may make aerobic
exercise easier. Also, the increase in nitric
oxide levels suggests better circulation that
may enhance performance in endurance ath-
letes.
Arginine improved athletic
performance
Doctors aren’t yet sure how arginine
improves athletic performance, but found a
benefit in elite male wrestlers. In this study,
nine elite male wrestlers took 1,500 mg of
arginine per day per 22 pounds of body
weight, or a placebo.
After two weeks, the men fasted for 12
hours after the last dose of arginine, drinking
only water, and then performed a cycling
test. For the test, the men pedaled for three
minutes at 60 to 70 revolutions per minute
(rpm) with no resistance, then maintained 60
rpm against a 90-watt resistance load for the
next three minutes, then tried to maintain 60
rpm as the resistance load increased by 30
watts every three minutes.
The arginine group cycled 5.8 percent
longer than placebo before exhaustion, an
improvement that may seem small but is sig-
nificant, doctors said.

Vitamin E may protect dental
health
Men and women with higher vitamin E lev-
els had healthier teeth and gums compared
to those with lower vitamin E levels
Periodontitis is an infection of the soft gum
tissue in the mouth that can erode the bone
that supports the teeth and raise chances for
other health conditions. In this study, doctors
measured serum tocopherol vitamin E levels
in 4,708 men and women and compared
with gum, oral ligament, and bone health.
Those with the lowest vitamin E levels had
the poorest dental health while those with
the highest vitamin E levels had the healthiest
teeth and gums. Those with the highest vita-
min E levels had 10.3 percent better gum
attachment, 6.3 percent smaller gum pock-
ets, and a 60.6 percent better overall peri-
odontitis score.
Discussing the findings, doctors said vita-
min E may have the ability to stop bone loss
by suppressing the action of the enzyme
nitric oxide synthase, helping to preserve
teeth and gums.

Nutrients help women maintain
healthy hair
Omega-3s and antioxidants
Healthy hair needs a reliable supply of
hair-matrix cells, which it receives from the
papilla at the base of the hair follicle.
Inflammation and impaired circulation can
starve the hair follicle of this nutrient-rich
blood supply, leading to hair loss.
In this study, 120 healthy women of normal
to overweight had typical stage-1 hair loss,
where they were losing up to 100 strands of
hair per day. The women took a placebo or a
combination of 460 mg of omega-3 fish oil,
460 mg of black currant seed oil, 7.5 IU of
vitamin E, 30 mg of vitamin C, and 1 mg of
lycopene per day.
After six months, while the placebo group
continued to lose hair without improving,
women who took the antioxidants had more
hair follicles in the growth cycle and fewer in
the resting cycle, and about nine in 10 saw
less hair loss, greater hair diameter, and
increased hair density.
