function properly. It’s very possible that the
absence of iodine as a widely recommended
daily mineral has led to some real vulnerabil-
ities and an upsurge in cancers throughout
the body.
Of course, the thyroid needs iodine (along
with the amino acid L-tyrosine) for produc-
tion of the hormone, thyroxine (T4), and the
conversion of this hormone into triiodothyro-
nine (T3) as needed for metabolism. The thy-
roid is often considered the body’s “gas
pedal”, and when no fuel is getting to that
pedal, people can experience weight gain, a
“foggy” feeling, and low energy overall.
As for the right dosage, that truly depends
on individual needs. Some integrative practi-
tioners may suggest 50 mg per day for 3
months followed by 6.25 or 12.5 mg daily
thereafter for optimal health. Some people
who experience typical iodine deficiency
symptoms – extra sensitivity to cold, easy
weight gain, dry skin, foggy-headedness –
may want to consider a smaller maintenance
dose of 3 mg.
Choosing the right forms of iodine might
seem tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. In
most formulations, including multivitamins,
you’ll find potassium iodide as the source of
iodine. There’s nothing wrong with that –
potassium iodide is a good workman-like
form, and is very well used by the thyroid.
Sodium iodide is a form that fuels the thyroid
as well. For cellular health, molecular iodine
is the form most efficiently used by breast tis-
sue.7-9
Because of this, you may need a supple-
ment that includes more than one form of
the mineral so you can get the most from
your regimen. Look for a formula that pro-
vides three forms of iodine, sodium iodide,
potassium iodide, and molecular iodide – at
levels that can actually make a noticeably
positive difference.
Iodine is essential to good health. It can –
and should – be a part of a daily regimen.
The more that people learn about iodine, the
more there is to like. For a healthy-function-
ing thyroid, better energy levels, and protect-
ing the body against DNA damage, it is a
miraculous mineral whose time has come
again.
