Others may wonder which forms of iodine
are best.
First, a few observations about supplemen-
tal levels.
The minimum daily requirement for iodine
in the United States is very low – about 150
micrograms (mcg) per day. Typically, we in
the United States consume 240 mcg per day
– just enough to prevent goiter, but not
enough for truly beneficial health effects for
the thyroid, breast, prostate, and colon tis-
sue, detoxification, or metabolism.
Consider that some of the best success sto-
ries regarding iodine take place in nations
with a high degree of iodine consumption,
like Japan. People in Japan consume more
than 12 mg (that’s 12,000 mcg for compari-
son) of iodine per day – 50 times more than
the average American, and it has caused no
harm.
In fact, life expectancy in Japan is just over
84 years old, (88 for women specifically)
while in the United States it is about 79 years
(81 for women). The infant mortality in Japan
is less than half that of the United States, too.
And, America faces almost three times the
number of deaths from breast cancer than
Japan.3,4
Studies have noted a connection between
thyroid abnormalities and breast cancer, and
iodine intake may be a factor. Today, one in
8 American women will develop breast can-
cer during her lifetime.5 Compare that to
thirty years ago, when iodine consumption
was much higher, and one in 20 women
developed breast cancer. Women in Japan
who consume high amounts of dietary iodine
have much lower rates of breast cancer and
thyroid problems. However, when women
emigrate from Japan to the United States and
begin eating a Western diet, their breast can-
cer and thyroid disease rates increase dra-
matically.
In other research, scientific tests using
estrogen sensitive breast cancer cells exposed
to iodine have shown that they are less likely
to grow and spread. Fibrocystic breast dis-
ease is also common, and creates swelling,
tenderness, and discomfort. A report pub-
lished in the Canadian Journal of Surgery
showed clinical improvement in breast pain,
fibrosis, and cysts in 98% of women receiving
iodine.6
Also remember that iodine was routinely
used by physicians until the late 1930’s at
doses of 37 mg or more per day, depending
upon the disorder. Recent research shows
that a multitude of cells throughout the body
cells have a receptor site for iodine – certain-
ly breast cells, as noted in the studies already
mentioned – but also the prostate, ovaries
and uterus, which require iodine in order to
