Nutrients--Magnesium, Folic
Acid--Help Restore Balance And
Healthy Vital Signs
Magnesium
Being normal weight, but carrying more fat
and less lean muscle mass may be less
healthy than being muscularly fit and fat. The
condition is called “skinny fat,” or metaboli-
cally-obese-normal-weight (MONW), and
raises chances for diabetes and other health
problems.
Doctors wanted to test the effects of mag-
nesium on 47 MONW people who were low
in magnesium. The group took 382 mg of
liquid magnesium per day or a placebo. After
four months, while the placebo group
improved slightly, those taking magnesium
saw 2.0 and 3.8 mmHg lower systolic and
diastolic blood pressure, respectively; a near-
ly 50 percent improvement in insulin sensi-
tivity, a 12 percent decline in fasting blood
sugar levels, and a 47 percent drop in triglyc-
erides.

Folic acid in women
Many women of child-bearing age may
inherit or develop a hormone imbalance dis-
order called polycystic ovary syndrome, or
PCOS. Symptoms include irregular menstrual
cycles, cystic ovaries, infertility, excess hair
growth, obesity, and circulatory problems.
Doctors thought folic acid might help.
In the study, 81 obese women with PCOS
took 1 mg or 5 mg of folic acid per day, or a
placebo. After eight weeks, compared to
placebo, both folic acid groups had lower
levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory fac-
tor linked to heart disease; less insulin resist-
ance, and lower total cholesterol. The high-
dose folic acid group also saw a greater
decline in LDL cholesterol levels while pre-
serving HDL levels; the “bad” and “good”
cholesterols, respectively.

Folic Acid Supplements
You may have noticed that there are sever-
al forms of “folic acid” available in supple-
ments.
One example is “Methyl Folate,” said to be
the most biologically active form of folic acid
Indeed, \with certain inherited errors in
metabolism and under a variety of physiolog-
ic stresses, the transformation of folic acid
into the active form of folate either does not
properly take place or is inadequate.
Those with such conditions, and those tak-
ing high doses of folate for specific therapeu-
tic purposes should certainly consider supple-
menting with these forms of folic acid.
For the vast majority of supplement users,
however, this does not seem to be necessary.
Extensive research and experience, ranging
from food fortification and supplementation,
with folic acid, show that thise pure, relative-
ly inexpensive form of the vitamine works
fine. Study after study shows that folic acid
experts the desired protective and therapeu-
tic actions.
Folic Acid, in fact, seens to be one of those
nutrients that is actually more bioavailable in
cooked food than raw food, and in pure sup-
plement form.
For this reason, it is not really necessary to
use the more “exotic” forms of folate in gen-
eral purpose supplements, such as multivi-
tains.
Here is a quote from Dr. Alan Gaby’s
book, Nutritional Medicine:
“Folic acid absorption appears to be
enhanced by gastric hydrochloric acid.1
However, achlorhydric individuals were
found not to have low serum folate levels
(even though folic acid absorption was
reduced),2 apparently because achlorhydria
leads to small-intestinal overgrowth of bacte-
ria that synthesize folate.3
“The bioavailability of folic acid, when
administered at usual doses, is close to
100%. At a dose of 5 mg, 93% was absorbed
by healthy volunteers,4 and at a dose of
1,000 mg/day at least 10% was absorbed.5
The absorption of poly-glutamate forms of
folate (the forms present in food) is less than
that of synthetic folic acid,6 perhaps in the
range of one-third to one-half.7,8 In devel-
oping recommendations for folate intake, the
absorption of food-derived folate has been
estimated to be half that of folic acid.”

“'Best Form to Take: Folic acid naturally
found in food is much less available to the
body compared with synthetic folic acid
found both in supplements and added to
grain products in the United States. Women
with a recent history of giving birth to babies
with neural tube defects participated in a
study to determine which form of folic acid is
best absorbed--dietary folic acid or folic acid
from supplements.265 They received either
orange juice containing 400 mcg of folic acid
per day or a supplement containing the same
amount. Overall, the supplement folic acid
was better absorbed than the folic acid from
orange juice.”

water-soluble B9 vitamin. Folate occurs natu-
rally in food, and folic acid is the synthetic
form of this vitamin. Folic acid is well-tolerat-
ed in amounts found in fortified foods and
supplements.
“Bioavailability: In healthy adults, bioavail-
ability of food folate was 80% that of folic
acid (586). Bread fortified with folic acid
increased serum (45%) and red blood cell
folate (22%) (454). Food (spinach and yeast
folate) was less bioavailable than folic acid
