Doctor’s Best
As we age, our body’s elasticity and ability to heal
diminish. While physical activity is an important part
of any healthful lifestyle, the more active we are, the
more likely it is that our joints will pay a price for
it. As the old saying goes, “It’s not the years. It’s the
mileage.” Many factors contribute to our ‘rate of
aging’, including genes, hormone levels, diet and exer-
cise patterns. One of the contributors is a vital sub-
stance found in our body in abundance when we’re
born, but which fades as we age.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA), a long chain molecule con-
sisting of alternating units of glucosamine and glu-
curonic acid, can absorb up to 3,000 times its
weight in water and plays a crucial
role in maintaining joint function.
HA stimulates DNA synthesis
and fibroblast cell division, which
are essential for healthy skin and cartilage.
Hyaluronic Acid
and Type II Collagen
Given the importance of HA for healthy skin and
joints, plus its ‘normal’ decrease with aging, it is
highly desirable to find an effective, absorbable
source of HA. BioCell Collagen II
®
is a purified,
hydrolyzed (partially digested) type II collagen sup-
plement that provides at least 10% by weight of a
low molecular weight HA, which is highly absorbable.
The regular use of Collagen Type II can be
expected to enhance levels in individuals with an
age-related decline in hyaluronic acid.
The Benefits of Chondroitin Sulfate
In addition to HA, type II collagen (the collagen
that makes up moveable joints) provides a high
level (typically 20%) of chondroitin sulfate (CS). CS
is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that helps form the
connective tissue of skin, tendons, cartilage, liga-
ments and bone matrix.
CS also inhibits enzymes such as collagenase, elas-
tase and proteoglycanase that become overactive in
joint and skin aging, thereby promoting healthy car-
tilage and connective tissue.
These components of hydrolyzed type II collagen
have been shown to maintain cartilage and promote
new cartilage and proteoglycan synthesis. They also
enable the production of a thick, lubricating synovial
fluid that cushions joints and protects the surface of
cartilage from free radical and enzymatic degradation.
The Results of the Research
In February 2004, the results of a double blind
study with Collagen Type II were released.
In a study that measured peak absorption, oral
Collagen Type II HA levels significantly increased in
the blood at 4 hours, and peaked at 7,000% above
placebo at 12 hours.
In a study to determine bioavailability of a con-
stant daily dose, blood levels of Collagen Type II HA
became stabilized at seven days and remained so
throughout the study at a level 3,543% higher than
controls. Thus, the regular use of Collagen Type II
can be expected to enhance levels in individuals with
an age-related decline in hyaluronic acid.
