months compared to those taking placebo. Hawthorn is primarily
used for heart conditions and is not usually considered a nervine.
However, it may help alleviate anxiety symptoms such as heart pal-
pitations and increased blood pressure. “

Candida Complex
Candida Complex
An Alterative Formula, with Anti-Fungal and Anti-Infective
Properties. Clinically developed specifically for those with chronic
candida and yeast infections.
Please Note: Chronic Candidiasis is not commonly recognized as a
medical condition by conventional medicine; any diagnosis and/or
treatment of this condition should be supervised by a health profes-
sional. This product is not intended to treat, cure or mitigate disease.
James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

brain speed slows you might become forget-
ful, and experience the first signs of dementia
or loss of mental quickness, attention, and
memory.
Rhythm:
Rhythm measures the balance
between the two hemispheres of the brain. A
balanced brain creates and receives electrici-
ty in a smooth, even flow. When the electric-
ity is generated in bursts, it is called an
arrhythmia, and it signifies the beginning of
brain dysfunction. When your rhythm is
affected, you might feel anxious, nervous, or
irritable. What's more, rhythm also influences
how acutely you feel pain.
Synchrony:
Synchrony balances the move-
ment of four different brain waves across
both hemispheres of the brain. The electricity
your brain creates moves through your body
in different types of waves. When they are
out of balance, you will experience sleep dis-
orders during the night and depression and
fear during the day.
These four functions are coordinated by
four individual neurotransmitters, or bio-
chemicals, which are each produced in spe-
cific locations within the brain. Voltage
expresses itself through dopamine, the princi-
pal amphetamine-like chemical of the brain.
Speed expresses itself through acetylcholine,
the main insulation of neurons. Rhythm
expresses itself through GABA, (gamma-
aminobutyric acid), the calming chemical in
the brain. Synchrony expresses itself through
serotonin, the principal regulator of the
brain. When any of these four bio-chemicals
is lacking, the aging process begins. For
example, when dopamine levels fall, weight
gain is common, because metabolism is
reduced. Each of the bio-chemicals works in
much the same way. Each controls a few spe-
cific age accelerators that can wreak havoc
on the entire body.
When optimally functioning, these same
four neurotransmitters are also great age
decelerators. By boosting each of them with
medications, hormones, nutrient supple-
ments, diet, or lifestyle changes, you can
build up your brain power, speed, synchrony,
and rhythm. By increasing your dopamine,
for example, you can achieve weight loss; by
increasing acetylcholine, you can improve
your memory; by increasing GABA, you can
control pain; and, by increasing serotonin,
you can give yourself, and your brain, the
rest you deserve.
What's more the latest medical studies sug-
gest that the brain can be taught to re-ignite
your hormone systems, and actually resurrect
the aging body. Increased amounts of these
biochemicals can send new messages to the
body to produce more hormones. By regulat-
ing this connection, we can delay or possibly
even stop the premature aging of the brain
and body. We can teach the body to restore
health in affected areas, and enhance health
in the organs and systems that have not been
damaged.

Enhancing quercetin
bioavailability: A two-stage
approach without excipients.
by Kelly C. Hein, Ph.D.
The subject of over 10,000 published stud-
ies and scholarly reviews to date, quercetin is
the most extensively researched flavonoid.
Its clinical applications are diverse, with car-
diovascular, neurocognitive and immune
health at the forefront of an expanding thera-
peutic profile.1 Initially acclaimed for its
antioxidant activity, the past decade of
research has underscored cellular signal
transduction, enzyme activity and gene
expression as major conduits of its health
benefits.*
By virtue of its ability to donate electrons,
this archetypal flavonoid is one of the most
powerful free radical scavengers in the
human diet.2 However, the structural attrib-
utes that afford this capability also impair dif-
fusion across membranes.2 Accordingly,
pharmacokinetic studies indicate that only
20-30% of an oral dose is absorbed.3,4
Despite its ephemeral presence in plasma,
studies report clinically significant responses
to oral quercetin supplementation.1 Toward
the goal of maximizing efficacy, bioavailabili-
ty optimization remains an ongoing focus of
research and formulation.*
A suggestion from nature
Major dietary sources of quercetin include
onions, apples and tea.2 In contrast to the
form in most supplements, most of the
quercetin in foods is attached to a sugar mol-
ecule. This conjugate is known as a glyco-
side. The onion plant tends to affix glucose
to form quercetin-3-glucoside (isoquercetin),
while apple trees and tea plants tend to
attach rutinose, yielding rutin.2 Considering
the size and polarity of these cumbersome
structural accessories, some rules of medici-
nal chemistry would predict difficulty cross-
ing membranes. Antithetically, for iso-
quercetin, this is not the case.*
Clinical research conducted in the
Netherlands has compared quercetin
bioavailability from different foods and sup-
plements.4,5 Absorption from isoquercetin-
rich onions was 52%, compared to 24% from
a standard quercetin supplement.5 In paral-
lel, animal studies have consistently docu-
mented superior bioavailability of iso-
quercetin relative to quercetin and rutin.6
Taken together, the studies show that iso-
quercetin is 2-6-fold more bioavailable than
its alycone, quercetin.*
In vitro studies pursued a hypothesis that
the glucose moiety, akin to a forged passport,
was using a transporter that normally pumps
glucose across membranes of the intestinal
wall. Elegant lines of experimental inquiry
confirmed this biochemical exploitation as
the mechanism of action.7 The rapid
absorption observed with isoquercetin is con-
sistent with this active transport. For
quercetin and rutin, which cannot use the
transporter, peak levels are reached within 2-
4 and 6-8 hours, respectively.8,9
Isoquercetin, in contrast, can deliver peak
concentrations in less than 40 minutes.8*
Overcoming a second challenge
Regardless of the preparation, quercetin
