daily dose. So you do not need to
buy a separate selenium supple-
ment if it’s already in your multivit-
amin.
Most multivitamins do not con-
tain 200 mg of CoQ10, however,
and if you are not already taking a
separate CoQ10 supplement, you
certainly should consider doing so.
CoQ10, in 100 and 200 mg dosage
is readily available and the price
has gone down considerable.
Ubiquinol, the higher potency form
of CoQ10 is another option. A 100
mg dose of Ubiquinol, once a day,
might be sufficient. I recommend
100 mg twice a day if possible.
Getting back to the study, the
Swedish researchers set up a ran-
domized double-blind placebo-
controlled trial with 443 Swedish
citizens aged between 70 and 88.
Of these, 228 participants complet-
ed the study.
Participants were randomly
assigned to receive either 200 mg
per day of coenzyme Q10 capsules
and 200 micrograms per day of
organic selenium yeast tablets, or
similar placebo for 48 months.
Results showed that 12.6% of
people in the placebo group died
of cardiovascular disease, com-
pared with only 5.9% in the seleni-
um plus CoQ10 group.
In addition, the biomarker of ten-
sion in the heart wall called N-ter-
minal proBNP (NT-proBNP) was
also significantly lower in the sup-
plement group, compared to place-
bo, said the researchers.
Data from echocardiography also
revealed a “significant better car-
diac function score was found in
the active supplementation com-
pared to the placebo group”.
Selenium is an essential
macronutrient, and is considered to
be an important antioxidant. High
levels of selenium have been
inversely associated with risk of
developing several cancers, includ-
ing bladder, prostate and thryroid.
According to Nutrition Focus,
Selenium has been reported to
have diverse anticancer actions.
Selenium inhibits cancer in ani-
mals. Low soil levels of selenium
(probably associated with low
dietary intake), have been associat-
ed with increased cancer incidence
in humans. Blood levels of seleni-
um have been reported to be low
in patients with prostate cancer. In
preliminary reports, people with
the lowest blood levels of selenium
had between 3.8 and 5.8 times the
risk of dying from cancer compared
with those who had the highest
selenium levels.
In another trial, 5,141 men were
randomly assigned to receive a
placebo or a daily supplement con-
taining 100 mcg of selenium, 120
mg of vitamin C, 30 IU of vitamin
E, 6 mg of beta-carotene, and 20
mg of zinc for eight years. Among
men with a normal PSA level at the
start of the study, there was a statis-
tically significant 48% reduction in
the incidence of prostate cancer.
The mineral is included in
between 50 and 100 different pro-
teins in the body, with multifarious
roles including building heart mus-
cles and healthy sperm. However,
cancer prevention remains one of
the major benefits of selenium, and
it is the only mineral that qualifies
for a Food and Drug Administration
(FDA)-approved qualified health
claim for general cancer reduction
incidence.
A recent review paper by Joyce
McCann and Bruce Ames from the
Nutrition and Metabolism Center at
Children’s Hospital Oakland
Research Institute in Oakland
(CHORI) indicated that even a
moderate deficiency in selenium
may have long-term detrimental
effects.
You might be wondering if it mat-
ters what form of selenium should
be used in your supplement? This
study used an yeast source. Other
forms are selenomethionine,
selenocysteine, sodium selenite
and sodium selenate. According to
Alan Gaby, MD, in his book
Nutritional Medicine, “none of
these preparations has clearly been
shown to be preferable to the oth-
ers.”
We have spoken about CoQ10
many times over the years. It plays
a vital role in the production of
chemical energy in the mitochon-
dria.
It has been studied for its role in
cognitive health, heart health, and
anti-aging (in oral and topical for-
mulations). It has also been shown
to benefit those suffering from angi-
na, heart attack and hypertension.
The conclusion, once again, is
not that you should run out and
buy two supplements–selenium
and CoQ10. Instead, you should
make sure you are utilizing a broad
spectrum of nutritional supple-
ments that work synergistically to
prevent clinical and subclinical
deficiencies and, in addition,
enhance optimal function.

Yohimbe Bark 1:3
Yohimbe Bark 1:3
Yohimbe Bark is a well known treatment form male
impotence and is traditionally used as an
aphrodisiac.
Who might benefit from this herbal supplement?
Those men suffering from impotence and inability to
perform.
Yohimbe is for impotence in men. It increases blood
flow into the penis and can help sustain an erection. It
can help men who cannot get an erection and for
those who cannot maintain an erection. Constant use
of Yohimbe, however, can create irritability and aggra-
vate the prostate. Try to not use it more than a few
days in a row. It is possible to have success if used the
day results are desired. If the impotence is not a vascu-
lar problem, Yohimbe will not work. If stress is a relat-
ed issue, add Kava Kava Root.
Phyto-Tech™ Yohimbe Bark 1:3 is a tincture of
Yohimbe Bark (Pausinystalia yohimbe), in pure grain
alcohol and deionized water. It provided 333 mg/ml
(30 drops).
More potent preparations, typically containing high-
er, standardized levels of the alkaloid yohimbine, are
available, but these products are best used only under
the supervision of a physician. High doses of the
yohimbine alkaloid can cause potentially dangerous
side effects.
Yohimbe bark (not yohimbine alkaloid) has a long
history of use for many conditions.
The following dosage for Phyto-Tech™ Yohimbe Bark
1:3 is recommended: For chronic impotence, take 15-
30 drops 2-3 times daily, or as needed, in juice or
water. For more immediate results, take 20-40 drops,
once or twice, only, within a day’s time.
Cautions: Use caution if you have high blood pres-
sure; do not use if you have chronic inflammation of
reproductive organs or prostate; do not use long term;
may potentiate pharmaceutical MAO-inhibitors;
