Rhodiola also relieves fatigue and normalizes mood in depressed individuals, and has antioxidant properties that help protect the nervous system from oxidative damage. By stimulating cognitive function, improving resistance to stress and fighting free radicals, Rhodiola can have immediate effects on cognitive function and memory and can also provide long- term support to help preserve future brain functions. A study involving 56 healthy male and female physicians working the night shift (age 24-35) were given 170 mg of Rhodiola extract for 6 weeks. Their mental performance was evaluated using tests to determine speed of visual and auditory perception, attention capacity, and short-term memory. A significant improvement in mental performance tests was observed in the treatment group during the first two-week period. Another double-blind, placebo controlled study involving 60 foreign students at a Russian high school showed that supplementation by the students with Rhodiola resulted in a decrease of mental fatigue and situational anxiety and an increase in physical work capacity, coordination, kinesthetic sensitivity, and general well-being. For athletes or anyone seeking to enhance physical performance, Rhodiola has been shown to improve strength, endurance, cardiovascular measures, coordination and recovery time. In one study, 42 master level competitive skiers were given either Rhodiola rosea extract or placebo 30- 60 minutes before a 20 km race on skies that involved carrying a rifle and shooting targets at stops. The athletes receiving Rhodiola showed a significant increase in shooting accuracy, less arm tremor, better coordination, and their heart rates returned to normal more quickly. Rhodiola has also been found to have cardio protective and anticancer benefits and can increase fertility in both men and women. In 1986 it was discovered that the chemical composition that sets Rhodiola rosea apart from other species of Rhodiola are three cinnamyl alchohol-vicianosides identified as rosavin, rosin and rosarin. The term rosavins is used to include all three of these chemical compounds. Rosavins are known as the marker compound that differentiates true Rhodiola rosea extract from other Rhodiola species. Saw Palmetto is the well known herb for swollen or enlarged prostate, commonly called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Symptoms of BPH range from difficult urination, dull ache, impotence, difficulty maintaining an erection, waking to urinate, urgency to urinate and precancerous blood chemistry such as elevated PSA’s. It is thought that Saw Palmetto inhibits dihydrotestosterone, the compound that causes prostate cells to multiply excessively. * Many herbalists consider Saw Palmetto to be a valuable male tonic to help maintain prostate health as men age. Prostate inflammation is common in men over 50, especially those with a diet high in animal products and trans fatty acids. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. Prostate cancer is the male equivalent to uterine and ovarian cancer in women. Some believe that chronic BPH is a precursor to prostate cancer in some men. Saw Palmetto can be used as a preventative mens’ tonic herb to help avoid the swelling in the first place. If one has BPH already, Saw Palmetto can reduce the inflammation to normalize the prostate. . . . continued on page 92 Important Notice: The information given here is designed to help you make informed decisions about your health, and the proper use of dietary supplements. Product Reference Guide: Willner Chemists Phyto-Tech™ Herbal Supplements Nutrients Prolong Life, Reduce Heart and Circulatory Events: Flavones, Flavanones, and Polyphenols P eople can lose vision from several conditions affecting the retina of the eye, including loss of blood flow to the optic nerve. In this study, doctors gave 48 people with one of several retinal blood vessel diseases 100 mg of CoQ10 per day, then followed up for an average of 43 months. Using a standard measurement, called the Visual Field Index (VFI), doctors ranked annual changes in the percentage of the field of vision available to participants, with a score of 100 percent representing a perfect age-adjusted visual field. Overall, all participants who took CoQ10 improved in measurements of VFI at least 9.3 percent per year, and as much as 22 percent per year, depending on the blood vessel disease affecting the retina. VFI scores decreased when one participant discontinued CoQ10, and increased after resuming CoQ10. One of the first signs of circulatory disease is when these vessels stiffen and restrict blood flow. In this study, 96 men and women, average age 49, took a placebo or a total of 1,000 mg of citrus flavones, flavanones, and olive leaf polyphenols per day. After eight weeks, vessel flexibility increased 3 percent compared to 0.5 percent for placebo. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure also decreased. Total and LDL cholesterol decreased for the flavone/polyphenol group while increasing for placebo, and HDL—the good cholesterol— increased while decreasing for placebo. Signs of oxidative stress and inflammation also decreased in the antioxidant group while not improving for placebo. Its interesting that the CoQ10 was given at 100 mg. I would have thought that a higherdose, probably 200 mg. was called for. Coq10 is available at Willner Chemists from many suppliers at dosages from 50 mg. all the way up to 400 mg The pharmacists and nutritionists at Willner Chemists will be happy to help you choose the formulation best for your specific needs.
