Umckaloabo is made from an extract of the Pelargonium sidoides root. P. sidoides was first cultivated in South Africa where it has a long history of use in treating coughs, upper respiratory infections and throat irritations. Umckaloabo can provide fast relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of viral illnesses such as colds and most bronchial infections. A study published in 2007 tested P. sidoides effects on 207 patients aged 18-55 years who presented common cold symptoms. The patients in the P. sidoides treatment group had a significant reduction in symptoms such as nasal drainage, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, scratchy throat, hoarseness, cough, headache, muscle aches and fever. Clinical trials in adults and children diagnosed with acute bronchitis show that treatment with P. sidoides reduces the severity of symptoms, such as coughing, expectoration, chest pain, shortness of breath and wheezing, and shortens the duration of sick leave from work or school by 2 days. In 2008 a meta-analysis of 4 randomized clinical trials showed P. sidoides to be superior in efficacy compared with placebo in the treatment of acute bronchitis. Researchers concluded that P. sidoides offers an effective alternative to antibiotics. Extracts of the P. sidoides root are antibacterial and immunomodulating. Studies have identified gallic acid and its methyl ester to be the prominent immunomodulatory constituents of P. sidoides, with both compounds demonstrating significant macrophage (white blood cell) activity. Numerous other studies document P. sidoides’ antibacterial activity and confirm the roots’ efficacy in treating the common cold, sore throat and bronchitis. Coumarins, phenolics and unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, from P. sidoides demonstrate direct antibacterial activity and significant immune stimulation of the host. A 2007 study published in Phytomedicine examined the impact of P. sidoides on the activity of human peripheral blood phagocytes and found several important components contributing to the roots’ biological activity.
