Astragalus, Maitake, and Shiitake are well known for their ability to stimulate deep immunity. They are great for those prone to getting sick or those who have chronic immune deficiency that needs support. Astragalus contains polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and phytosterols which contribute to its immune enhancing affects. It increases the number of stem cells in bone marrow and lymph tissue and encourages their development into active immune cells. One of the most active constituents in Maitake and Shiitake mushroom is believed to be a beta glucan polysaccharide that powers up the immune system. Beta glucan, which can also be derived from yeast, acts as a “biological defense modifier” to stimulate and modulate various immune responses. It has been heavily researched for its immune enhancing properties and its ability to activate macrophage immune cells, NK-Cells, T-Cells, B-Cells, and cytokines. A study from Harvard Medical School found animals treated with beta glucan were more resistant to bacterial, viral, and fungal inundation. Beta glucan treatment stimulated proliferation of white blood cells and increased phagocytic macrophage activity.
