Consuming enough plant sterols is key to getting the benefits, and experts recommend getting at least 2 grams (2,000 mg) per day. 4,5 However, most people get only 200-400 mg of plant sterols per day in a regular, even healthy, diet. Vegetarians and vegans get a bit more when they eat more plant foods—up to 600 mg daily. 3,4 Foods fortified with plant sterol esters are available, but research shows that even those who buy and incorporate sterol- fortified foods (e.g., margarine) into their diet consume less than 900 mg per day. NEW WATER-DISPERSIBLE PLANT STEROLS ARE A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE ANSWER. Water-dispersible (WD) liquid plant sterols, composed of non-GMO pine tree sterols and water, have been clinically proven to lower cholesterol. In a randomized, placebo- controlled trial, men and women (average age 50) with mildly high cholesterol consumed 2 grams of WD plant sterols or 3.4 grams plant sterol esters for 4 weeks. The results showed significant reduction in LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides among those who consumed plant sterols but the WD liquid plant sterol was more effective; Most of us know that cholesterol is an important part of our body’s functions. We need cholesterol to produce hormones and digestive enzymes and vitamin D. While our bodies make all the cholesterol we need, most of us also consume cholesterol in our diet primarily through meat, cheese, and other dairy products. And some of us have high cholesterol because of family history. Regardless of the cause, high cholesterol levels can adversely affect our health and longevity. CONSUMING PLANT STEROLS LOWERS YOUR CHOLESTEROL, NATURALLY Sterols are natural compounds found in plants (nuts, seeds, beans, and plant oils) and animals; from plants they are called plant sterols and from animals, including humans, they are called cholesterol. Plant sterols have been proven to effectively lower cholesterol in two important ways. First, they replace the cholesterol from food in our intestines so that we absorb less of it; second, they reduce the re-absorption of cholesterol in the bile process of our digestion. This excess cholesterol is then eliminated through the bowel rather than stored in the body. 1,2 PLANT STEROLS SUPPORT A HEALTHIER HEART Continued on back > THE US NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL EDUCATION PROGRAM RECOMMENDS 2 GRAMS (2000 MG) OF PLANT STEROLS FOR PEOPLE WHO WISH TO LOWER THEIR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS. 5 Continued on Page 18 >
