Astragalus contains polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and phytosterols which contribute to its immune enhancing affects. It increases the number of stem cells in bone marrow and lymph tissue and encourages their development into active immune cells. One of the most active constituents in Maitake and Shiitake mushroom is believed to be a beta glucan polysaccharide that powers up the immune system. Beta glucan, which can also be derived from yeast, acts as a “biological defense modifier” to stimulate and modulate various immune responses.
