Researchers concluded that P. sidoides offers an effective alternative to antibiotics. Extracts of the P. sidoides root are antibacterial and immunomodulating. Studies have identified gallic acid and its methyl ester to be the prominent immunomodulatory constituents of P. sidoides, with both compounds demonstrating significant macrophage (white blood cell) activity. Numerous other studies document P. sidoides’ antibacterial activity and confirm the roots’ efficacy in treating the common cold, sore throat and bronchitis. Coumarins, phenolics and unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, from P. sidoides demonstrate direct antibacterial activity and significant immune stimulation of the host.
