Valerian may be enough to control pain after relatively mild surgeries or dental procedures. It is also a smooth muscle relaxer for pain from menstrual cramps, digestive cramps, gall bladder and kidney stones. According to herbalists, Valerian will not remove all pain like a pharmaceutical pain killer but will instead, reduce the percent of pain recognition by 10-50%. Contrary to popular belief, Valium was not derived from Valerian. They sound alike and are used for similar conditions, but are not related. The generally acknowledged active constituent, especially for purposes of standardization, is valerenic acid. Ingredients: Phyto-Tech™ Valerian Root 1:2 contains Fresh Valerian Root, 500 mg/ml. Product Reference Guide: Willner Chemists Phyto-Tech™ Herbal Supplements Pumpkin Seed Relieves Symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia A nother role for curcumin. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver due to causes other than alcohol, such as diabetes, obesity, and age, and there is no approved drug treatment. In this study, 84 overweight or obese adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), aged 25 to 50, took a placebo or 40 mg of curcumin after breakfast and dinner. After three months, while the placebo group had not improved significantly, in the curcumin group, 40 percent of those who began with mild symptoms no longer had NAFLD, and 85 percent of those with moderate NAFLD saw symptoms decrease to mild. Also for curcumin, the inflammatory factor high-sensitivity C-reactive protein declined 39 percent; LDL cholesterol declined 15.8 percent, to 114.6 from 135.6; triglycerides declined 18 percent, to 142.5 from 175.9; and fasting blood insulin levels declined 18.75 percent, to 6.5 from 8.0. The prostate has two growth cycles, doubling in size during puberty, then growing slowly from age 25 on. As it enlarges, it presses on the urethra. At the same time, the bladder wall thickens, weakening the bladder. Symptoms include feeling the bladder is full after urinating, a frequent need to urinate, and weak flow, stopping, starting, and straining. In this study, 60 men, average age 62 with moderate to severe BPH, took 350 mg of pumpkin seed extract at bedtime. Beginning at four weeks, men reported less need to urinate at night, and after 12 weeks, 78.6 percent reported symptoms on the International Prostate Symptom Score had declined by an average of 30.1 percent. Ultrasound showed average bladder volume after urinating declined to 2.1 ounces from 2.8 ounces before pumpkin seed.
