New research has emphasized a need for greater levels of vitamin D supplement. The amount commonly found in multivitamins is now 800 to 1000 IU daily, rather than 400 IU. Testing for vitiamin D is now common along with other blood work during doctor's exams and, as a result, even higher amounts are now commonly recommended. The current RDA assumes that ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) are equivalent; however, some evidence indicates that ergocalciferol is less than one third as potent as cholecalciferol. Therefore, many experts now recommend using vitamin D supplements containing cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in order to meet these higher intake levels.
