As defined by herbalists, “Gentian can be considered the
perfect bitter herb to stimulate digestion in numerous ways.
The bitter compounds in Gentian stimulate the bitter taste
buds on the tongue. this sends a message to the brain to
increase bile from the liver, which emulsifies or digests fat. In
a lesser way, the bitter stimulation also sends a message to
increase hydrochloric acid from the stomach, which increases
protein digestion. In other words, bitters stimulate the body’s
ability to digest and therefore assimilate fat and protein. . .”

P
remenstrual syndrome affects millions of
women and can last up to two weeks
before menses.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects
millions of women and is recognized as the
most significant disorder among women.
Several days to 2 weeks before menses, a
range of emotional, behavioral, and physical
symptoms can occur. These symptoms known
as PMS are decreased following the menstrual
period. Prevalence of PMS during the
reproductive period has been reported to be
between 70% to 90%.
The most common symptoms in PMS
include abdominal bloating, breast
tenderness, anxiety, crying spells, depression,
fatigue, lack of energy, anger and irritability,
changes in appetite, and varying degrees of
edema. Etiology of PMS still remains
unknown.
In this study, 66 female college students,
average age 21, diagnosed with PMS, took a
placebo or 500 mg of calcium per day.
Doctors measured symptoms before and two
months after taking calcium.
Symptoms were similar in both groups
before taking calcium, but after one and two
monthly cycles, anxiety, depression,
emotional changes, water retention and other
body changes improved for the women
taking calcium. The calcium group was given
500 mg calcium for two cycles, after lunch.
The type of calcium used was not provided.
Doctors concluded calcium is a low-cost,
effective treatment for reducing symptoms of
PMS.
Previous studies showed that positive results
were obtained with 1000 mg calcium per day
as well, but this study indicated that 500 mg
daily was as effective.
