Willner Chemists: The Nutritional Supplement Professionals
Indications:
Red Yeast Rice is produced by fermenting yeast (Monascus
purpureus) over rice. It has a long history of use in Chinese
medicine to lower cholesterol, improve blood circulation,
and help digestion. Studies report that Red Yeast Rice can
lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, total
cholesterol, and triglycerides by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-
CoA reductace, which helps the body make cholesterol. Red
Yeast Rice naturally contains similar compounds (monacolins)
as those contained in statin medications (pharmaceuticals
used to lower cholesterol). The difference is that statins are
synthetically manufactured drugs, whereas the compounds
found in Red Yeast Rice are naturally occurring. Researchers
are uncertain as to whether Red Yeast Rice is effective
because of its natural statin-like compounds or if it is other
constituents in it, such as sterols, isoflavones, and
monounsaturated fatty acids, that are responsible.
It is important to avoid Red Yeast Rice products that may be
low quality and may contain citrinin, a contaminate that can
cause kidney failure and genetic damage to cells. Citrin is
formed when Red Yeast Rice is not fermented properly. In
addition, much of the Red Yeast Rice on the market,
especially imported Red Yeast Rice, is processed with heat,
which diminishes its activity. Phyto-Tech™ uses a high quality
Organic Red Yeast Rice produced in the United States that is
cold-processed in order to maintain purity, potency, safety,
and a high activity level. Every batch is tested to insure no
citrinin is present and monacolins are consistent as a natural
product.
Because Red Yeast Rice is a natural type of statin and inhibits
the enzyme in the body that is needed to make cholesterol,
like statins drugs, it blocks the body’s ability to produce
Coenzyme Q-10 (Co-Q10). If one is taking statin drugs or
Red Yeast Rice, Co-Q10 should also be taken to avoid
depletion. Co-Q10 is required for the production of energy
within every cell of our body and is critical for the health of
all tissues and organs. It acts as a catalyst to the electron
transport chain in the mitochondria of our cells where ATP
(adenosine triphosphate) energy is produced. Co-Q10 is
especially important for the health of the heart due to the
organ’s high-energy demands. It can benefit anyone
experiencing cardiovascular problems such as high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, angina, arrhythmias or congestive
heart failure. Co-Q10 improves overall heart function by
enhancing energy production, inhibiting blood clot
formation, improving the heart’s pumping action, and
preventing the oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol).

High Antioxidant Levels May Slow
Parkinson's Disease
New Study Shows Oxidative
Stress Plays a Role.
Earlier studies suggest that low levels of
antioxidants encourage Parkinson's disease
(PD) to develop and advance. In this study,
doctors measured levels of antioxidants in
104 people with early-stage and advanced-
stage Parkinson's disease, and compared them
to 52 healthy people of similar age and
gender.
Comparing the two groups, all of those with
Parkinson's disease had lower circulating
levels of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and
lycopene than healthy participants. Levels of
these three carotenoid antioxidants were also
lower in those in the advanced stages of
Parkinson's disease compared to those in its
early stages.
After Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's
disease is the second most common age-
related nerve disease. Doctors think
Parkinson's disease may progress as the ability
of the body to fight off radical oxygen
species-the cause of oxidative stress-
decreases with age. With life expectancy
increasing, doctors hope to show that
maintaining good levels of antioxidants,
especially carotenoids, can slow and possibly
help prevent Parkinson's disease.

We recommend adding an
antioxidant supplement, preferably
a blend, to your daily vitamin
regimen. You may be getting the
basic vitamin antioxidants, such as
vitamin C, vitamin E, etc in your
multivitamin. Plant derived
antioxidants ("phyto" antioxidants),
however, are often lacking. Read
