The importance of maintaining a
healthy gastrointestinal tract cannot be
overstated. Microbial imbalance or dys-
biosis is when there’s an imbalance in the
intestinal bacteria. Your body’s immune
system, nervous system, endocrine system
all interact with the bacteria in the gut
and any imbalance can result in poor
health. Probiotics play a vital role main-
taining a healthy gut and that can have a

deal of research has been done to isolate
and reproduce specific strains of benefi-
cial bacteria. A number of requirements
have been identified as important proper-

are: the ability to adhere to cells, prevent
pathogen adherence and growth, be safe,
persist and multiply, and coaggregate (the
ability of bacteria become attached to

Lactobacillus strains; rhamnosus, aci-
dophilus, plantarum, casei, reuteri, and
the Bifido strains breve, longum, and lac-

Nutrient May Protect DNA
M
aintaining a healthy balance of
intestinal microbes is important for
good health. Those with type 2 diabetes
usually have a microbial imbalance, called
“dysbiosis”, which means they have a
disproportional amount of “unfriendly”
bacteria and toxins in the gut. In this study,
43 men and women with type 2 diabetes,
took for at least one year 120 grams of
fermented milk per day, alone as a placebo
or with the probiotics lactobacillus
acidophilus La-5 and bifidobacterium
animalis.
After six weeks, long-term average blood
sugar, and total and LDL cholesterols had
declined for the probiotics group while
increasing for placebo. Measures of
inflammation and insulin sensitivity improved
in both groups, which doctors attributed to
beneficial sugars and proteins in fermented
milk.
