Who would benefit from taking this supplement? Women experi-
encing the following problems may find this herb helpful: PMS,
menstrual cramps, uncomfortable menopausal symptoms.
Black Cohosh is considered by herbalists to be a distinctive
woman’s remedy. It stimulates delayed menses as an emmenogogue
while relaxing the muscles around the uterine area to help decrease
menstrual cramps. It can help PMS symptoms and help to regulate a
woman back into a more normal cycle. It can also help amenorrhea
and dysmenorrhea. It is commonly combined with Chaste Tree Berry
and Dong Quai Root.
It is also a famous remedy in menopause. German studies show
that Black Cohosh will diminish the negative side effects of
menopause by improving symptoms such as hot flashes, perspira-
tion, heart palpitations, nervousness and irritability, sleep problems
and depression. Research suggests estrogenic activity in the alcoholic
extract, inhibiting LH but not follicle stimulating hormone. Some
research refutes estrogen activity and suggests neurotransmitter inter-
ference. It either fools the pituitary from looking for leutinizing hor-
mone or actually inhibits LH. This results in a decrease in the above-
mentioned symptoms and exerts a most positive effect on
menopause.

Black Walnut Hull
This herb is traditionally used to support intestinal health.
The Black Walnut used in this supplement is derived from the
hulls while in their green state. This is when they are most potent.
Who would benefit from this supplement? Those who are con-
cerned about possible parasite, fungal or bacterial infections, includ-
ing candidiasis; those with gastrointestinal problems such as indiges-
tion, diarrhea and constipation.
Fresh Black Walnut Hulls are harvested in their green state (before
they blacken) where they are more potent. Black Walnut’s two main
active chemicals are juglone and tannins. Juglone is antibiotic and
antifungal and has a normalizing effect on intestinal tissue Tannins
are astringents that reduce secretions, relieve irritation and tighten
tissues by shrinking the top layers of the skin. These properties led to
the use of Black Walnut Hull for treating gastrointestinal problems
such as indigestion, diarrhea and constipation. It is also considered a
strong killer of fungal infections such as athletes’ foot, Candida
Albicans and other internal and topical fungal infections. It is a great
addition to a Candida treatment protocol.
Black Walnut Hull also enjoys a reputation as a parasite killer. It
will help to destroy amoebas, protozoans (giardia, blastocytis homin-
is), pinworms, tinneas and ringworm. Use larger doses once a para-
sitic infection is in place. Often, treatment needs go for one month
in order to kill parasites in all cycles or forms from adult to egg. It
can be combined with other anti-parasitic treatment. Black Walnut
Hull can be used preventitively if one is traveling to an area where
parasites are common or unusual. Take Black Walnut Hull for a few
days prior to when one leaves the area and continue taking the
entire length of the trip. One must still use common sense and avoid
possible parasite contaminated food and drink. Common symptoms
of intestinal parasites are diarrhea, gas or bloating, nausea or vomit-
ing, stomach pain or tenderness, fatigue or weakness, weight loss
and presence of worms in stool. If you suspect you have a parasite
infestation, consult with a physician.
Cautions: Prolonged use is not advised.

Walnut Hulls.

What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome includes several
symptoms such as obesity around the
abdomen, elevated blood pressure and sugar,
high triglycerides, low levels of HDL-the
“good” cholesterol, and may be clinically the
same as prediabetes.
Magnesium
This review of nine studies covered 31,876
people and compared magnesium in the diet
to chances for developing metabolic
syndrome. Men and women who got the
most magnesium were 22 percent less likely
to develop metabolic syndrome compared to
those who got the least magnesium.
Magnesium helps metabolize lipids, and
also glucose-possibly by helping preserve the
specialized cells in the pancreas that produce
insulin, the hormone that helps the body
metabolize glucose, doctors said.
This is just one more study supporting the
importance of adequate magnesium intake
whether through the diet, or in supplements.
Many responsible supplement manufacturers
have changed the ratio of magnesium to
calcium in their supplements, reflecting this
new information.
Willvite, the all-purpose multivitamin
multimineral supplement from Willner
Chemists, used to have a 1:2 ratio of
magnesium to calcium. The new, revised
Willvite Formula has modified that ratio, to
3:4. In other words, a full four per day dose
of Willvite now provides 600 mg of
magnesium and 800 mg of calcium. Two per
day will, or course, provide 300 mg of
magnesium and only 400 mg of calcium.
Many nutritionists now feel that it is better to
lower the calcium levels in supplements.

Vitamin E
The other nutrient shown to effect
metabolic syndrome is vitamin E. Adults with
metabolic syndrome had lower circulating
levels of vitamin E and absorbed less than
healthy people. In this study, 10 healthy
adults and 10 with metabolic syndrome took
15 mg of a type of alpha-tocopherol vitamin
E in the morning with an 8-ounce glass of
skim, low-fat, or whole milk. Doctors
measured blood levels of vitamin E regularly
over the next 72 hours.
Those with metabolic syndrome had lower
circulating alpha-tocopherol levels, higher
LDL cholesterol levels, and elevated signs of
inflammation including C-reactive protein.
The healthy adults absorbed 29.5 percent of
the vitamin E compared to 26.1 percent for
those with metabolic syndrome, regardless of
the fat content of the milk.
Discussing the findings, doctors said
because metabolic syndrome has a link to
oxidative stress, those with the condition
may benefit from the powerful antioxidant
properties of vitamin E, and from adding
more vitamin E to the diet. Studies are
underway to determine if other forms of
vitamin E absorb at different rates.

Everyday Nutrients Reduce Chances of
Metabolic Syndrome
When buying a vitamin E supplement, you should make sure you are buying a “natural”
vitamin E. The natural vitamin E, in the ingredient listing, will begin with “d-alpha . . .”
while the synthetic vitamin E begins with “dl-alpha . . .”
In addition, natural vitamin E occurs in eight
isomeric forms. It is best to get a supplement that
contains all eight. The easy way to do that is to
look for “Mixed Tocopherols” on the label.
The pharmacists and nutritionists at Willner
Chemists will be happy to assist you with this.
Online, at
, you can easily
compare prices and choose from a list of vitamin E
supplements using the “By Generic Product” drop
down menu at the upper left of the home page.
