New Evidence Supports Vitamin
D, Curcumin, For Depression
Vitamin D in a new review
Prior studies of vitamin D and depression
had inconsistent findings because they were
flawed, according to researchers who con-
ducted this new review. Many of the earlier
studies failed to measure vitamin D levels in
participants, or used too small or too large a
dose.
To try to get more reliable results,
researchers separated the flawed studies from
the well-constructed studies and analyzed
again. Doctors found that vitamin D, when
measured properly in participants and given
in doses of 1,200 IU per day, had a signifi-
cant positive effect on symptoms of depres-
sion.
Reviewing only the flawed studies, doctors
found the opposite, and when researchers
combined both the flawed and well-con-
structed studies, the large size of some of the
flawed studies overpowered the findings
from the well-constructed studies. For exam-
ple, one flawed study used a 200 IU dose of
vitamin D on a population of 160,000
women, and found weak results for mood;
enough to obscure the real benefits of vita-
min D in reducing symptoms of depression.

Curcumin
Because curcumin influences several bio-
logical functions linked to major depression,
doctors wanted to test its effect in treating
depressive disorders.
In the study, 56 people with major depres-
sive disorder took 500 mg of curcumin twice
per day, or a placebo. The curcumin supple-
ment contained 88 percent total curcumi-
noids.
After four weeks, both the placebo and
curcumin groups had improved scores on
standard depression symptom questionnaires,
but from the fourth to the eighth week, cur-
cumin was more effective than placebo in
improving multiple mood symptoms.

Vitamin C And Omega-3
Supplements Reduce Colds,
Increase Exercise Capacity
Vitamin C increased activity
Wanting to be less active is an early sign of
vitamin C deficiency, along with longer-last-
ing colds. Doctors wanted to test the effects
of vitamin C on physical activity and respira-
tory tract infections during peak cold season.
In the study, 28 healthy non-smoking men,
aged 18 to 35, either healthy weight or
obese, took 1,000 mg of vitamin C per day
or a placebo. Over the course of the winter,
fewer men in the vitamin C group reported
catching cold, and those that did spent 59
percent less time ill. During the last two
weeks of the study, men in the vitamin C
group increased physical activity 40 percent
above the activity level reported by
the placebo group.
Discussing their findings,
doctors said, because oxidative
stress is linked to fatigue, the
good results may be due to the
antioxidants in vitamin C.

Omega-3s boost “exercise economy”
In this exercise study, 20 men took 3,600
mg of EPA-rich fish oil per day, or a placebo.
After eight weeks, while there were no
increases for placebo, in the omega-3 group
EPA levels increased 148 percent and DHA
levels 13 percent. During a cycling test, doc-
tors found the men with higher red blood
cell levels of EPA required less oxygen com-
pared to the same test at the beginning of
the study.
Doctors call the effect “exercise economy,”
where the need for oxygen decreases as the
levels of EPA rise. The EPA group also felt
they needed to use less energy to complete
the cycling test, a psychological benefit.
