Is Your Omega-3 Bank Account
In The Red?
Fish and Omega-3 Oil
Supplementation Important During
Pregnancy
This educational article provided by Nordic
Naturals.
Congratulations, you’re pregnant! For the
next 40 weeks, you can expect countless
contradictory pearls of wisdom, solicited and
unsolicited, along with the occasional unin-
vited belly rub. One of the long-standing
commandments of pregnancy wisdom has
been: don’t eat fish while pregnant. This is
one piece of advice you can ignore (we wish
we could say the same for uninvited belly
rubs!) In fact, instead of avoiding fish, the
FDA now recommends you eat 2 or 3 serv-
ings a week. So you’ve stopped obsessing
about those last few cocktails before you dis-
covered you were pregnant, you just got
used to taking your prenatal vitamin, and
now you’re supposed to eat three servings of
sardines per week? Why?
In 2004, the FDA created an advisory that
encouraged pregnant women to consume
between 8-12 ounces of fish weekly, but not
exceed this amount due to concerns about
methylmercury toxicity. The advice had a
greater effect than intended: a 2005 follow-
up study found that most pregnant women
were barely consuming this much - weekly.
Many prominent researchers dismissed the
advisory, stating that the need for fish con-
sumption, particularly for sufficient omega-3
intake, was imperative for proper neurologi-
cal fetal development – and that the recom-
mended intake level was dangerously low.
Recently, the FDA has revised its own advice,
and now recommends consumption of fish
low in mercury throughout pregnancy. In
other words: Forget about not eating fish,
and start eating 2 or 3 servings per week.
For many moms, the benefit of eating fish
during pregnancy was nothing new: in fact,
studies have frequently found associations
between reduced allergies, improved cogni-
tive outcomes, language skills, and even post-
partum depression, with how much fish a
woman consumes during – or before – her
pregnancy. Since fish tend to be one of the
richest sources of essential omega-3 fatty
acids, researchers have explored the effects
of fish oil on pregnancy and found associa-
tions with lowered risk of preterm delivery,
improved infant birth weight and head cir-
cumference, and healthier
labor and delivery.
Interestingly, the foods
(and fish) you ate before
you became pregnant
matter as well as what you
eat now. As women, we
have the capacity to store
fat, much to the disap-
proval of our appear-
ance-obsessed society.
To your baby, however,
that’s a good thing! Part
of the reason women
store fat so efficiently is
because our body is prepar-
ing a sort of bank account
of one of the primary
known beneficial com-
pounds present in fish: omega-3 fatty acids.
Ever since puberty, you have been slowly
making deposits in your omega-3 bank
account, just in case you decided to become
pregnant. At times of pregnancy and lacta-
tion, these fat stores (which, by the way, are
localized in our gluteofemoral areas) are lib-
erated and transferred via placenta and
breast milk to the developing fetus/nursling.
Omega 3 fatty acids are a family of fats that
are “essential”, which means they cannot be
produced in the body and must come from
an external source (usually oily fish, or fish
oil. Flax and chia are rich in omega-3s too,
but a different kind – one that must be con-
verted into omega-3s that are essential to the
body, and humans tend not to be very good
at that conversion. Fish are great at this con-
version, thus, fish tend to be high in omega-
3s that people tend to be deficient in). Since
most people don’t consume a lot of
anchovies, sardines, and other oily fish, most
people tend to be lower in omega-3 EPA and
DHA than is optimal for maintaining health.
Omega-3s are essential to our bodies for
many reasons, as they help to make up the
membrane – or outer protective housing - in
each of the 60 trillion cells of our bodies,
and are vitally important for normal develop-
ment of the brain and retinal tissues. They
also serve as important modulators of our
inflammation response, which means that
when our body’s immune response is pro-
voked, and we respond by sending inflam-
matory signals, we usually tap into our
reserve of omega-3 EPA and DHA to help
put out the fire.
So with constant withdrawals from our
omega-3 bank accounts to help combat the
frequent inflammatory insults we are inun-
dated with, and very infrequent deposits
from our food intake, it’s pretty common to
begin your pregnancy with your omega-3
bank account already in the red. Remember,
omega-3s are essential, and you cannot pro-
duce them without getting them from your
foods. They’re not just essential for you;
they’re especially essential for fetal develop-
ment.
While the FDA now recommends consum-
ing 2-3 servings of fish low in mercury a
week, you can ensure you make daily
deposits into your omega-3 bank account by
taking a fish oil supplement in addition to
that. Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA is the
official omega-3 of the American Pregnancy
Association. Because of the strict purification
measures, you can enjoy all the benefits fish
oil has to offer without worrying about
potentially harmful environmental toxins.
Make sure you choose a fish oil that has
undergone a process of purification to
remove mercury, lead, PCBs, and other con-
taminants. Fish oil is generally recognized as
safe for everyone, so talk to your doctor
about how much is enough for you and your
baby to flourish.
If this is all brand new information to you,
and you’re towards the end of your third
trimester or even holding your brand new
