James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

Staying Healthy In Our Later
Years--Nutrients That Help
Vitamin D improves strength and
physical performance in older
people.
This study analyzed vitamin D levels and
physical performance in 616 older people
who had visited one of five hospital emer-
gency departments as a result of a fall.
Doctors measured vitamin D levels and then
administered several tests of strength.
The strength tests included timing how long
it took to get up from a seated position, walk
away and return
to a seated posi-
tion; standing
from a seated
position five times
in a row; a test of
hand grip strength,
and a timed test
of standing bal-
ance on one foot,
two feet side by
side, and one foot
in front of the
other.
Compared to
those with lower levels of vitamin D, men
with higher vitamin D had greater hand grip
strength, faster get-up-and-go times, and
faster five-time sit-to-stand. Women with
higher vitamin D levels were quicker in the
get-up-and-go test.

Magnesium reduces hip fracture,
strengthens bone in older people.
Doctors in this Norwegian study measured
the amount of trace minerals in the water
supply and then compared magnesium levels
in the water to the number of hip fractures
over a seven-year period in 700,000 men
and women aged 50 to 85.
Levels of magnesium in the water supply
were generally low, but in areas where mag-
nesium was higher, researchers saw fewer hip
fractures in both men and women. While hip
fractures are a major health issue in Norway,
the results suggest adding magnesium to the
diet could help protect against hip fracture in
older populations.

Fiber good late in life--improves
longevity after a heart attack!
Fiber has heart-health benefits, but doctors
had assumed that once people have a heart
attack, adding fiber to the diet won’t help. In
this large, long-term study, people surviving a
heart attack lived longer the more fiber they
consumed.
Researchers measured the diets in men and
women before and after a first heart attack
and followed up with the men for 22 years
and the women for 32 years. Those who got
the most fiber, especially from whole grain
cereal, after the heart attack were 31 percent
less likely to die from any cause and 35 per-
cent less likely to die from heart or circulato-
ry problems compared to those who got the
least fiber.
Doctors said fiber may help by lowering
systemic inflammation, LDL cholesterol, and
improving blood sugar control, suggesting
that “It’s never too late,” to change lifestyle
habits.

Omega-3s protect against stroke
Earlier studies found a link between certain
fats and heart disease, and doctors in this
study wanted to test different types of fats
and chances of stroke. Researchers com-
pared 964 postmenopausal women who had
had a stroke with 964 women of the same
race and age who had not, over a 20-year
follow-up period.
After adjusting for differences in lifestyle
and other health factors, doctors found that
women with higher circulating levels of trans-
fats and saturated fats were more likely to
have had a stroke while women with more of
the omega-3s docosahexaenoic and docos-
apentaenoic acid (DHA and DPA) were 28
percent less likely to have had a stroke com-
pared to women with lower omega-3 levels.

Vitamin A Reduces Chromic
Inflammation in Women
Vitamin A can help regulate the immune
system by helping reduce chronic inflamma-
tion. Those who are obese also have chronic
low-level inflammation. In this study, doctors
gave a placebo or 25,000 IU of vitamin A per
day to 75 obese and non-obese women.
After four months, compared to placebo,
vitamin A significantly reduced levels of two
inflammatory proteins linked to type 2 dia-
betes and hardening of the arteries. Both
inflammatory proteins affect the immune
function, and lowering their levels could
decrease chances of women developing
these chronic diseases, researchers said.
Because vitamin A can regulate the
immune system, doctors say more study may
also reveal a link to autoimmunity in women.

Nutrition; 2013, Vol. 32, No. 4, 280-5
*Note from Don Goldberg: Did the
researchers use actual vitamin A, or beta-
carotene? Several years ago, due to unneces-
sarily alarming cautions about vitamin A,
many supplements totally replaced vitamin A
with carotene, which the body can convert
to vitamin A. I think this is a mistake, as
carotene may not be as effective as actual
vitamin A on the immune system, mucous
membrane integrity, etc. For this reason, we
retained 25% of the total vitamin A content
“. . . women with more of the omega-3s
docosahexaenoic and docosapentaenoic
acid (DHA and DPA) were 28 percent
less likely to have had a stroke com-
pared to women with lower omega-3
levels.”
