the nutritional supplement professionals
and increases the overall antioxidant capacity of the blood.
The powerful antioxidants in Green Tea may help fight the free
radicals that contribute to skin, lung, and stomach cancer as well as
contribute to lowered blood pressure and LDL cholesterol. Green
Tea is rich in a type of polyphenol called catechin. Catechins are 40
to 200 times more effective in seeking out and destroying free radi-
cals than Vitamin A, C and E. These catechins include four major
polyphenols including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin
gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin (EC). Of these
compounds EGCG is the most abundant in green tea and has gener-
ated the most interest. Peer?reviewed scientific research has consis-
tently shown that EGCG is a potent antioxidant, deactivating health-
damaging free-radicals. By virtue of its antioxidant effects EGCG has
been shown to exert a number of beneficial activities, such as reduc-
ing inflammation, and normalizing cell and tissue functions. In pro-
moting cardiovascular health EGCG has been shown to inhibit free-
radical activity in the arteries, improving coronary circulation. Other
studies have shown that ECGC has a benefit in normalizing blood
glucose and protecting the pancreas from oxidative damage, as well
as in boosting metabolism and burning fat. Green tea catechins and
ECGC in particular have also been shown to naturally support detox-
ification and the elimination of toxic substances from the body while
protecting the liver.
Grape skin and grape seed extracts are anti-inflammatory and
radioprotective. They are abundant in a group of polyphenols called
procyanidins. Procyanidins are strong antioxidants, lipid peroxidation
inhibitors, and free radical scavengers. Procyanidins have antimuta-
genic effects, meaning they can counteract environmental mutagens,
which are thought to be one of the causes of chronic degenerative
diseases. Procyanidins also increase circulation making them helpful
for conditions such as venous insufficiency (a condition in which the
veins have trouble sending blood from the legs back to the heart). A
placebo controlled study showed that treatment with procyanidins
improved venous functionality and reduced pain, cramps, edema
and paresthesias (tingling). Due to procyanidins positive effects on
circulation, grape skin and seed extracts are helpful for numerous
vision disorders. Studies show treatment with procyanidins from the
extracts increase resistance to glare, decrease ocular stress from pro-
longed activity at a computer and improve contrast sensitivity, retinal
function and sensitivity in myopia (nearsightedness).

Arnica Oil 1:6 Topical
Arnica Oil 1:6 Topical
A popular first-aid remedy for trauma, injuries.
Arnica is the pre-eminent remedy for trauma, injuries, and acci-
dents and is a common part of first aid kits and home medicine cab-
inets. This topical oil is massaged into painful tissue that has been
traumatized from an accident, athletic event and overexertion.
Massage Therapists and Chiropractors commonly use arnica oil on
muscle and joints that are problematic in order to disburse congest-
ed fluids in a painful area.
It is thought that Arnica works as a fluid transport stimulating herb.
It moves interstitual fluids through ischemic tissue. Ischemic tissue is
tissue that has diminished oxygen content because of restricted
blood and fluid flow. This action by Arnica on the painful tissue
helps it heal and stop the pain cycle. As a result of the increased cir-
culation, cellular waste is removed, bruises clear up, pain diminish-
es, tissue heals, tissue oxygenates and recovery time is significantly
reduced.
Athletes find arnica reduces potential for injury, reduces recovery
time from injury and bruising.
Arnica Topical Oil is great for the daily bumps and bruises
inevitable in life and especially childhood. It is safe for kids.
Phyto-Tech™ Arnica Oil 1:6 Topical contains the following: Arnica
montana Flowers (Wild Harvested), Sage Essential Oil, Extra Virgin
Cold Pressed Olive Oil,
Note: First extracted in alcohol and oil to maximize potency, then
the alcohol is removed.
Special Note: Most Arnica on the market is “Mexican” Arnica. This
is commonly Heterothica inuloides, an adulterant and is not true
Arnica. The Vitality Works Arnica products are made from the true
European Arnica montana.
Cautions: Do not apply to open wounds, ulcerations or on areas
prone to bleeding; Do not take internally; Discontinue use if very
sensitive skin results in a rash.
Complimentary Formulas and Single Herbs:
Phyto-Tech™ MuscleGesic, an oral formula for muscle and general
body pain, inflammation
Phyto-Tech™ Comfrey Root 1:3 (to promote healing of breaks,
fractures, sprains, cuts, lesions)
Phyto-Tech™ Valerian Root 1:2 (for severe pain)
Phyto-Tech™ St. John’s Wort 1:2 (if nerves are very sensitive or
painful)
Dosage: Massage into effected areas as needed. Repeat 2-3 times
per day or as needed.
Arnica works best if applied in full concentration to the problemat-
ic area. It is less effective if applied all over the body as massage oil.
Use a different oil for a massage (i.e. almond oil) and arnica on the
painful area.

Product Reference Guide: Willner Chemists Phyto-Tech™ Herbal Supplements
Prior studies found grape seed oil improved
lipid levels but effects on inflammation and
insulin resistance have been inconclusive. In
this study, 44 overweight or obese women on
a weight-loss diet took 15 percent of their
calories from grape seed oil, or a placebo of
sunflower oil.
After eight weeks, while there were no
improvements for placebo, two signs of
inflammation decreased significantly in the
grape seed oil group: high-sensitivity C-reac-
tive protein and tumor necrosis factor alpha
(TNF-a). Insulin resistance scores also
improved for those taking grape seed oil.

What Women Should Know
About Folic Acid and L-Methyl
Folate
By Edward Gruber, Certified Nutritionist
Many of us intuitively understand the need
for expectant mothers to adopt lifestyle
behaviors that increase their chances of hav-
ing a healthy baby. Eating a balanced diet
rich in nutrients that have been clinically
proven to promote optimal fetal develop-
ment is at the top of that list. Because most
women don't get enough of these vitamins,
minerals and essential fatty acids through the
foods they consume, supplementation is gen-
erally appropriate and necessary.
Folic acid and B12 in particular have
received a lot of attention from the scientific
community in recent years.
Folic Acid: What, Why, and When
Folic acid is the synthetic form of the B-
group vitamin folate, which is vital for a wide
range of enzymatic reactions that promote
normal fetal growth and development.
Important studies have shown that folic acid
significantly reduces the risk of a baby being
born with neural tube (brain and spinal cord)
defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and
anencephaly. Preliminary studies also suggest
that folic acid may decrease the risk of other
birth defects, including congenital heart
defects and cleft lip/ cleft palate and lowering
the risk of pre-term delivery.
Since NTDs and certain other defects usu-
ally occur during the first month of gestation,
experts believe it is crucial for women to
begin a folic acid regimen even before they
are expecting. Along these lines, the Mayo
Clinic and others recommend that women
start taking folic acid at least one month
before pregnancy, while the Hospital for Sick
Children recommends three months. To
decrease the risk of pre-term delivery, some
experts recommend starting a year before.
In my own practice, I recommend that
young women begin taking 800 mcg of folic
acid and 200 mcg of B12 in a multivitamin
when they are in their late teens and contin-
ue the regimen throughout their childbearing
years. (The reason for the B12 is based on
study sponsored by the National Institute of
Health which strongly indicates that children
born to women with low B12 have a two to
three times greater risk of NTDs.)
Women who have already had a baby with
an NTD, are usually advised to take more
than the generally recommended 600 to 800
mcg of folic acid. But since not all women
metabolize folic acid in the same way, it is
important to be aware of other exceptions to
the general dosage recommendations.
A GPS for the Road to Fetal Health
Scientific research is now beginning to
reveal that gene mutations in the folate
metabolism pathway (a series of genes that
regulates folic acid metabolism) can affect
how well the body processes folic acid. If
that biologic process is not coordinated prop-
erly in the early weeks of gestation, a possi-
ble neural tube defect may result in the
embryo.
I like to use the example of a GPS to
explain this breakdown in the metabolism
process: If there is a blockage along the road
to a destination, even the best GPS instruc-
tions won't help us get there. Similarly, if the
folate pathway is compromised, the folic acid
can't get to where it needs to be in order to
do its job properly.
A common genetic variation that's been
shown to interfere with folic acid metabolism
is known as MTHFR C677T. (The C677T des-
ignation means that the MTHFR gene muta-
tion was passed down by both parents.). This
mutation, which researchers estimate affects
approximately 25 to 50 percent of the popu-
lation, has also been associated with
increased miscarriage risk.
People with MTHFR gene mutations are
more likely to have high-homocysteine levels
- though not everyone with high homocys-
teine levels has the MTHFR gene variant.
High homocysteine, which can result from a
folic acid or B12 deficiency, has itself been
correlated with an increased risk of birth
defects and miscarriage.
For women who fall into the high homo-
cysteine and/or MTHFR categories, simply
upping the folic acid dosage is generally not
the answer. Indeed many doctors feel that
taking more than 1000 mcg of folic acid is an
inadvisable and even potentially risky prac-
tice. Rather, they should take a different
form of folic acid known as L-methyl folate.
(Several companies, including Nutri-Supreme
Research manufacture supplements with 1
mg of L-Methyl Folate)
Taking Action
Every day, it seems, science reveals new
ways to help ensure healthy pregnancies and
lower the risk of birth defects. But given all
the studies already linking folic acid and B12
deficiencies with NTDs and other birth
defects, is there anything we can do right
now to further that goal?
