months compared to those taking placebo. Hawthorn is primarily

James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

Nutrients improve symptoms in
type 2 diabetes
Ginger lowered blood sugar levels
Doctors are searching for alternative treat-
ments to improve insulin sensitivity in type 2
diabetes, and are exploring various herbs and
other natural substances. In this study, 88
people on standard treatment for type 2 dia-
betes took 3,000 mg of ginger powder per
day or a placebo. Doctors measured fasting
and long-term average blood sugar levels, as
well as insulin resistance; when the body
does not respond to normal amounts of
insulin, requiring more.
After eight weeks, the placebo group saw a
6 percent increase in fasting blood sugar
while the ginger group had a 5 percent
decline. Long-term average blood sugar lev-
els rose 1.3 percentage points for placebo,
and declined 0.5 percentage point in the gin-
ger group. While insulin resistance did not
change for placebo, it improved for those
taking ginger.
CoQ10 in diabetic eye disease
Those with diabetes for many years often
develop retinopathy—when damaged blood
vessels no longer feed the retina, causing
blindness. Chronic high blood sugar levels
and low antioxidant levels can trigger oxida-
tive stress, which contributes to retinopathy.
In this study, doctors wanted to compare
levels of coenzyme Q10 in those with diabet-
ic retinopathy and in healthy people. CoQ10
occurs naturally in the body and is a power-
ful antioxidant necessary for cellular energy.
Researchers measured CoQ10 in 50 people
with diabetic retinopathy and in 50 healthy
people of similar ages and genders.
Compared to those with retinopathy, circu-
lating levels of CoQ10 and antioxidant
capacity were much higher in healthy peo-
ple.

Nutrients reduce inflammation
and protect health
Lycopene lowered inflammation,
improved HDL
Chronic inflammation raises chances for
heart problems, possibly by triggering harmful
changes to HDL, the “good” cholesterol, but
direct evidence from studies is lacking, doc-
tors said. Researchers wanted to examine the
link between inflammation, HDL quality, and
the antioxidant lycopene.
In the study, 54 moderately overweight
middle-aged people ate a prescribed diet
with 10 mg, 70 mg, or 224 to 350 mg of
lycopene per day. After 12 weeks, while the
low-lycopene group saw little improvement,
the medium and high lycopene groups both
had similar, significant increases in two bene-
ficial types of HDL: HDL 2 and 3.
Doctors also looked at a byproduct of
inflammation, serum amyloid A, a harmful
protein which can displace beneficial pro-
teins in HDL. The low-lycopene group had
an increase in amyloid A while the medium
and high lycopene groups had decreases,
showing the heart-protective properties of
lycopene, doctors said.
More vitamin D, less inflammation
Doctors are beginning to create “inflamma-
tory profiles,” that compare the ratio of
inflammatory signs to anti-inflammatory signs,
to give a clearer picture of a person’s chances
for a healthy life. This is the first study to test
the link between levels of vitamin D and
inflammatory ratios.
In the study, researchers analyzed data
from 957 older adults, most taking treatment
for high blood pressure. Compared to those
who were deficient, with no more than 10
nanograms of vitamin D per milliliter of
blood (ng/mL), those with at least 30 ng/mL
of vitamin D had lower levels of inflamma-
tion, and a much closer ratio of inflammatory
signs to anti-inflammatory signs.
