event occurrence.
Armed with this information, Frost &
Sullivan then turned to the Agency for
Healthcare Research & Quality for current
costs of particular medical events associated
with the disease endpoints, and determined
the saved expenses from the reduction of a
single medical event along with the expected
annual cost of the medical intervention for
that portion of the entire target population
likely to experience such a medical event.
The study generated the number of avoided
medical events and the savings from reduced
hospital utilization. It recognized that not all
members of a targeted population would suf-
fer a medical event, but that the number
needed to treat with supplements would
greatly exceed those utilizing the healthcare
system for treatment of the disease. Finally,
acknowledging that some portion of the pop-
ulation is already using these dietary supple-
ments, the researchers determined that por-
tion of the cost savings that is already being
realized with supplement usage, and that
portion still to be realized with increased
supplement utilization.

HEALTH CARE COST SAVINGS
Dietary Supplements for Smart Prevention
A new economic report shows that taking specifc dietary supplements can provide signifcant individual and societal healthcare savings, by reducing
the number of hospitalizations and other costly medical events associated with chronic diseases. The report looked at eight dietary supplement
regimens and four conditions in a targeted population of U.S. adults 55+ who have the specifc conditions or are at high risk for the disease.

Vitamin E Shown To Maintain
Brain Health
The type of Vitamin E may be
important, however.
We have emphasized many times over the
years that vitamin E is one of the vitamins
where “natural” is not equal to “synthetic.”
In it’s natural form, vitamin E occurs as a
mixture of 8 different forms, or isomers.
In this study, Doctors measured all eight
forms, rather than the one form, alpha-toco-
pherol, measured in most studied. Their
results confirmed that each of the eight forms
of vitamin E plays a unique role in human
health.
Researchers measured vitamin E levels in
140 adults who were free from cognitive
impairment at the start of this study.
After eight years of follow-up, doctors
found, compared to those with lower levels,
those with higher levels of all eight forms of
vitamin E were less likely to develop cogni-
tive impairment and had lower levels of two
types of cell damage, oxidative and
nitrosative—from oxygen and nitrogen—and
were more likely to maintain cognitive
health.
Discussing their findings, doctors said eval-
uating only alpha-tocopherol might not be
the most accurate measure of vitamin E sta-
tus in humans and recommended people
maintain good levels of all forms of vitamin E.
While this study shows the benefit of main-
taining optimal levels of vitamin E for brain
health, we know that many other aspects of
good health are connected to vitamin E as
well. How do you choose a vitamin E supple-
ment that provides the full array of eight vita-
min E isomers?
First, avoid any vitamin E supplement that
lists dl-alpha tocopherol as the source of vita-
min E. The key is the “dl-alpha” at the start
of the name. This is the synthetic form, and
contains only one of the eight isomers. It is
less active than the natural form, d-alpha
tocopherol. Note that the natural form begins
with “d-alpha.”
But, even better, to get the full mixture of
eight vitamin E isomers, look for “mixed
tocopherols” as the source of vitamin E in the
supplement. This should provide the full, nat-
ural vitamin E mixture containing the eight
isomers--four tocopherols and four
tocotrienols.
This applies to vitamin E supplements as
well as the vitamin E in multivitamin supple-
ments.
One of the criticisms of “drug store vita-
mins” is that they typically use dl-alpha toco-
pherol, the synthetic form.
For many, our greatest fear is developing
conditions like Alzheimer’s disease when we
get older. If ensuring that we maintain high
levels of natural vitamin E--the tocopherols
and tocotrienols--it certain seems worth
doing.
Omega-3 And Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Helps Delay Cognitive Decline.
The previous article reported on the role of
natural vitamin E in brain health. This study
looked at the role of omega-3 oils and the
antioxidant, alpha lipoic acid.
Several earlier studies found eating more
fish, which contains omega-3s with anti-
