And then again, how do you explain the
fact that other studies, such as the first one
reported above, seem to show better results
with whey protein alone?
The bottom line may be that all protein
supplements are beneficial, and the most
important thing is to find one that is most
palatable and functional for you. The "biolog-
ical" quality of whey and casein is higher
than soy, for example, and this theorectically
means that less is needed by the body. Some
women, rightly or wrongly, are concerned
about the phytoestrogen content of soy, and
prefer a whey protein supplement for that
reason. Others prefer the milder flavor of
whey protein over soy.
Back to this recent study. Doctors said
more consumers are beginning to recognize
how important protein is for overall health
and well-being, and that this study shows
that a soy-dairy supplement may improve
muscle fitness for everyone from the casual
exerciser looking to maintain health to the
serious sports enthusiast seeking better per-
formance.

Ahead of the Curve: New
Studies on Resveratrol,
Coenzyme Q10, and
Ashwagandha
Here are some of the most promising
recent findings from the lab and small pilot
studies.
Resveratrol protects the ear
In this study, rats exposed to noise had bet-
ter hearing after taking resveratrol compared
to those not taking resveratrol. Inner-ear cells
had less inflammation and there were lower
circulating levels of oxygen free-radicals in
the resveratrol group. Doctors said, “By giv-
ing resveratrol, we can reduce the amount of
hearing loss and cognitive decline.”
This is not surprising. We already knew that
Ginkgo biloba has been shown to be of value
in treating conditions like tinitus. Ginkgo,
Resveratrol and similar herbal preparations
are very rich sources of various polypheonol
antioxidants, and this may explain their value
in this area, as well as peripheral and cere-
bral circulation.

CoQ10 reduced statin toxicity
Statin drugs lower cholesterol but with pos-
sible harmful side effects. Testing the three
most common statins, doctors found rat liver
cells pre-treated with CoQ10 were less toxic
than those not treated with CoQ10. Doctors
said their work demonstrates that adding
CoQ10 to statin treatment may help protect
the liver and other cells from injury due to
statin drugs.
Again, this should not surprise readers of
this newsletter. While many multivitamin
supplements have added CoQ10, or
increased the level (Willvite now contains 25
mg per four tablets), those taking statin drugs
shoulc consider additional supplementation,
perhaps using Ubiquinol, at levels of 100 to
200 mg per day.

Ashwagandha improved sperm
counts
Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb used as
an aphrodisiac in India. In this study, 46 men
with low sperm counts took 675 mg of ash-
wagandha per day, or a placebo. After 90
days, while the placebo group improved
slightly, men taking ashwagandha had 167
percent higher sperm counts and a 53 per-
cent increase in sperm motility; the ability of
sperm to move forward. Testosterone levels
in the men taking ashwagandha also
increased by 17 percent. Doctors said the
findings suggest ashwagandha root extract
safely and effectively treated male infertility.

Dental Health: Two nutrients
help preserve teeth and gums
Omega-3s and gum health
Two of the most common oral problems
are inflamed gums, known as gingivitis, and
infected gums, or periodontitis, which causes
bone loss and may signal heart problems.
Because omega-3s protect against heart dis-
ease, doctors wanted to test for a link to
periodontitis.
In the study, 60 otherwise healthy volun-
teers with moderate to severe chronic peri-
odontitis took 300 mg of omega-3s per day,
or a placebo. Both groups had dental scaling
and root planing treatments.
After 12 weeks, compared to placebo, the
omega-3 group had better gingivitis scores,
less gum bleeding, and pocket depths
between the teeth had shrunk by half.

Vitamin D for dental health
Doctors, government agencies, and med-
ical and dental societies have been arguing
for decades whether or not vitamin D helps
prevent tooth decay. In an effort to resolve
the issue, researchers reviewed 24 clinical tri-
als that took place from the 1920s through
the 1980s, covering 2,827 children. Most of
the studies preceded modern-day placebo-
controlled design.
These shortcomings aside, combining all
results, doctors found that vitamin D supple-
ments appeared to reduce the chances of
tooth decay by 47 percent.
Discussing their findings, researchers said
the results suggest, with a low degree of cer-
tainty, that vitamin D reduces the chances of
tooth decay. Because of the lack of studies
more recent than the 1980s, doctors suggest
new trials to bolster these preliminary find-
ings and build confidence that vitamin D
does indeed prevent tooth decay.
