Doctor’s Best
You May Not Be Getting
Enough Magnesium
The USDA’s Nationwide Food Consumption Survey
concluded that the amount of magnesium in the
average American diet was “not sufficient to meet
recommended standards". The FDA’s Total Diet
study conducted a similar study and came to the
same conclusion in the 1980’s. Difficult to absorb
and easily depleted by stress, strenuous exercise,
coffee, alcohol, and certain medications, studies have
shown that as much as 75% of the population in
Western countries consume less than the RDA of this
crucial mineral.
Research has shown that minerals chemically
bonded to amino acids are better absorbed, which
has given rise to the introduction of "chelated"
minerals as dietary supplements. But not all miner-
al chelates are equal.
Chelated Minerals and Absorption
Because amino acids have their own, much
wider entryways and do not require stomach acid
for release and absorption, mineral chelates are
able to cross the intestin-
al wall intact carrying the
mineral tightly bound
within an amino acid ring.
Once through the wall,
they go into the blood-
stream and the mineral is
then released for use by the body.
The Difference Between Buffered
and Fully-Reacted Chelates
Fully-reacted chelates have the magnesium ion
bound to an amino acid, such as glycine. This
would be called a magnesium glycinate chelate.
Buffered magnesium chelates are those which
contain a percentage of the magnesium as fully-
reacted amino acid chelates, while the remainder
is something like magnesium carbonate. Herein lies
the problem. The elemental weight of magnesium
in fully-reacted amino acid chelates is around
10%, whereas in the non-fully-reacted products,
the elemental weight of magnesium may be as
high as 25-30%.
Since amino acids have a relatively large
molecular weight, they take up much more space
in the capsule or tablet, so there is less magne-
sium per dosage. In other words, you’re not get-
ting your money’s worth of magnesium. High
Absorption Magnesium contains 100% fully-react-
ed – not buffered – chelates of magnesium with
the amino acids glycine and lysine.
Not All "Amino Acid Chelates"
Are True Chelates
For a mineral supplement to qualify as a gen-
uine chelate, it must be carefully processed to ensure
the mineral is chemically bonded to the amino
acid in a stable molecule with the right charac-
teristics.
The magnesium glycinate/lysinate in High
Absorption Magnesium is a genuine di-peptide
chelate. It has a molecular weight of 324 daltons,
considerably lower than the upper limit of 800
daltons stated in the definition of "mineral amino
acid chelates" adopted by the National
Nutritional Foods Association in 1996.
Why is it important to take
High Absorption Magnesium?
The heart will beat an average of 2 1/2 bil-
lion times in a lifetime. The energy and nutri-
ents required for this miracle of nature is enor-
mous, and maintaining heart tissue health is
essential for everybody, especially women.
One of the most versatile nutritive minerals,
magnesium is an essential activator of approxi-
mately 300 enzymes in the body, and is also
required for proper nerve function, heart rhythm
and bone integrity.
A key protein in cartilage and connective tis-
sue, glycine also benefits the nerves, supports col-
lagen formation, and helps build strong nails.
Lysine is an essential amino acid that supports
gastric function.
