tioners combine lower doses of California poppy with other nervines
to relieve anxiety. Researchers studied a combination of California
poppy, hawthorn flower (Crataegus laevigata), and magnesium in
264 people with mild to moderate anxiety. Those taking the herb
mixture had significantly improved anxiety symptoms after three
months compared to those taking placebo. Hawthorn is primarily
used for heart conditions and is not usually considered a nervine.
However, it may help alleviate anxiety symptoms such as heart pal-
pitations and increased blood pressure. “

James Duke, Ph.D., in his book The Green Pharmacy, makes the
following comment on Black walnut (Juglans nigra.) “Kathi Keville,
author of The Illustrated Herb Encyclopedia and Herbs for Health
and Healing, a California Heralist whom I admire, recounts one
impressive study showeing that the fresh husk of the black walnut
destroyed candida better than a commonly prescribed antifungal
drug . . .”
“Recurrent or chronic infections, including chronic candidiasis, are
characterized by a depressed immune system. A repetitive cycle
makes it difficult to overcome chronic candidiasis: a compromised
immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to damage to
the immune system, further weakining resistance.” (Murray and
Pizzorno, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine)
Enhanced immune system function may be the most important
component of treating this condition.

The Power of Plant-Based
Nutrition
Here’s a universal truth: adopting a lifestyle
conducive to long-term health requires effort.
Regular physical activity is part of the path to
wellness, but it’s not the only part of the
wellness equation. How you choose to nour-
ish your body has a real impact on the full
picture of your health, affecting how you feel
and how much energy you have to keep up
with your passions.
A whole food diet—one that limits refined
or processed foods—can be both energizing
and regenerative, nourishing your body with
everything it needs for day-to-day living.
Filling your plate with plant-based whole
foods will show you benefits in both your
health and waistline. The Earth will thank
you too—plant-based foods use far fewer
resources and produce fewer emissions than
animal-based foods. Don’t worry; including
more plant-based foods in your diet doesn’t
have to be drastic, and you don’t have to
permanently eliminate your favorite foods.
Focus on what you can ADD to your plate,
rather than what you subtract, and you’ll be
one step closer to wellness.
Better for Your Health
Compared to the average American diet,
plant-based diets are rich in all those things
you’ve been told to eat more of: fruits, veg-
etables, whole grains, nuts, and fiber—while
also being lower in the saturated fat and cho-
lesterol you’re advised to have less of. Eating
plant-based reduces the likelihood of many
chronic diseases, including high cholesterol,
hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Plant
foods contain many beneficial compounds
that support all parts of your body—including
your immune system, and healthy heart func-
tion.
Worried about your waistline? Those who
stick to a plant-based diet tend to have lower
body weights and body mass indexes (BMIs).
With over 2/3 of Americans either over-
weight or obese, this is welcome news.
Obesity is associated with many chronic dis-
ease including hypertension, diabetes, car-
diovascular diseases, and certain types of
cancer.
But even if we know the benefits of eating
plant-based, sometimes it can seem over-
whelming. These simple swaps will make it
easier for you to achieve a nutrient-dense,
plant-based diet.
But Where Do You Get Your Protein?
When you make a habit of eating plant-
based you’re likely to hear the question, “But
where do you get your protein?” While most
people associate protein with meat and eggs,
there are many plant-based sources of pro-
tein. Good thing because protein is not just
required to maintain and support muscle
development, but also for nearly every func-
tion of the body. Swap conventional animal
proteins for whole food, plant-based sources
of protein like beans, nuts, and seeds for the
base of your protein blend. Even greens and
grains such as quinoa, millet and wheat con-
tain protein. If looking at a protein supple-
ment, make sure it is minimally processed
and made from a variety of sources.
The Power of Greens
Much of the power in a plant-based diet
comes from an abundance of fruits and veg-
etables. Dark leafy greens provide dozens of
vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxi-
dants. It’s recommended that you eat at least
five servings of vegetables daily. If you’re hav-
ing a hard time fitting all your servings in,
consider adding in an algae supplement.
Chlorella is a nutritious, green micro-algae
that supports immune function, supplying
chlorophyll, protein, vitamins and minerals.
Antioxidant Arsenal
Antioxidants help prevent cellular damage
caused by unstable molecules called free rad-
icals. Contact with free radicals is unavoid-
able—some free radicals are actually an
essential part of your immune system—but
excessive exposure to free radicals from air
pollution and other toxins have been shown
to contribute to disease. Thus, the more
antioxidant support you can get from your
diet to help offset some of this free radical
damage, the better.
Berries, greens and superfruits such as açai,
mangosteen, and goji berries are great ways
to boost your antioxidant intake. Top your
cereal with these superfoods, or add them
into your morning smoothie to start the day
with an antioxidant kick.
Feel Full with Fiber
Fiber helps to keep your digestive system
moving smoothly, while keeping you feeling
fuller for longer. Unfortunately, most people
do not consume the recommended 25 grams
of fiber daily. Soluble fibers (found in oats,
legumes and vegetables) have been shown to
decrease cholesterol, and help in the stabi-
lization of blood glucose. Insoluble fiber (in
wheat, corn and vegetables) may delay glu-
cose absorption, increase satiety, and lower
cholesterol. Aim to add a food rich in fiber at
every meal.
Fat Won’t Make You Fat
Don’t ditch all the fat when you transition
to plant-based eating. Plant-based fats are
mostly unsaturated which makes them
healthy for your heart. Look for cold-pressed
oils and naturally rich sources of fat, such as
avocados, nuts and seeds. Chia, flax and
sacha inchi seeds are also high in the essen-
tial fatty acid Omega-3. Sprinkle chia and
ground flax onto salads, and incorporate nuts
into your snacks to reap the benefits of these
heart-healthy fats.
Better for the Planet, Too
It might come as a surprise, but what you
eat—specifically, the degree to which your
food choices are plant-based—can put a
