amount of fat and the kind of fat we eat can
have significant effects on health. Actually,
daily fat intake can be a matter of life and
death on both a cellular and personal level."
In concluding remarks, they asked, "May our
current diet with [its] decreased omega-
3/omega-6 ratio contribute to the increased
cancer incidence, and could an omega-3-
enriched diet be used as a preventive meas-
ure against cancer?" (Gleissman, 2010). ·Well,
there is certainly good evidence to suggest
that this is a distinct possibility.
Recent data suggest that omega-3 PUFAs
may also play a role in cancer formation by
counteracting the pro-cancer properties of
soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1
(sICAM-1). . . . Conversely, people with high-
er omega-3 intakes had lower sICAM-1 blood
levels and lower risk of cancer, suggesting that
omega-3 PUFA intake may counteract the
pro-carcinogenic actions of sICAM (Touvier,
2012).
Thus, there is increasing support for an anti-
cancer effect of EPA and DHA. Additionally,
there are data showing that if cancer has
developed, EPA and DHA supplementation
may ease the way by decreasing inflamma-
tion, and as will be discussed shortly,
decrease physical aspects of fatigue.
UNIQUE ROLE OF DHA IN CANCER
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
Epidemiological studies suggest that DHA is
important in the prevention of several types
of cancer, including cancers of the breast and
brain (Larsson, 2004; Berquin, 2008).
Since DHA is so vital for brain and nerve
cells, it has been looked at for help with brain
cancer. DHA is the most abundant fatty acid
in the brain and is vital to the health of nerve
cell membranes. DHA, as discussed in
Chapter 4, is metabolized by lipoxygeuase
enzymes, which through a series of steps
eventually produce neuroproteins and
resolvins, potent anti-inflammatmy and
inflammation-resolving com- pounds. As
such, DHA seems to be a good candidate to
investigate for protection against brain can-
cer.
Targets Toxic cancer Cells
Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in
Sweden in conjunction with Harvard
Meclical School have found that DHA exerts
anti-cancer effects and can induce cancer
cell destruction in neuroblastoma, a child-
hood brain cancer that was mentioned at the
start of this chapter (Gleissman, 2010). . . . In
other words, the more DHA and the longer it
is taken, the more cancer cells die. The
researchers concluded that their findings pro-
vide experimental evidence that DHA has
the ability to kill neuroblastoma cancer cells
that are resistant to chemotherapy drugs
(Lindskog, 2006).
Increases Effectiveness and Eases
Side Effects of Anti-Cancer Drugs
Surprisingly, DHA has been found to help
those with cancer in another way. One small
but impressive study examined the effect of
DHA when combined with conventional
drugs in breast cancer patients undergoing
chemotherapy. The results indicated that
incorporation of DHA can alter the treatment
outcome.
In this study, twenty-five women with rap-
idly progressing breast cancer were supple-
mented with 1.8 grams of DHA daily during
their chemotherapy treatments. The
researchers measured the women's blood
levels of DHA and then divided them into
high- and low-absorbing DHA groups. They
then tracked the survival times of the women
for approximately two and a half years.
Women in the high-absorbing group sur-
vived 47 percent longer and had slower
tumor progression compared to the women
in the low-absorbing group ( Bougnoux
2009).
Evidence suggests that inflammation may
be a major contributing factor to the fatigue
many cancer patients exprnience as a side
effect of cancer and of standard treatment
involving radiation and chemotherapy.
Because research in healthy people has
shown reduced inflammation with higher
dietary intake of omega-3 PUFAs, investiga-
tors at the National Institutes of Health in
Bethesda, Maryland, wanted to explore
whether omega-3s could potentially reduce
fatigue in breast cancer patients. The
researchers recruited 633 breast cancer
patients participating in the Health, Eating,
Activity, and Lifestyle Study. The women
completed a food-frequency/dietary-supple-
ment questionnaire and provided a blood
sample so C-reactive protein (CRP) and
serum amyloid A protein (two markers of
inflammation) could be measured thirty
months after diagnosis. They also completed
standard fatigue assessment tests (the Piper
Fatigue Scale and Short Form-36 vitality
scale) thirty-nine months after diagnosis.
·women with high CRP levels were almost
twice (LS times) as likely to experience
fatigue. Women with higher intakes of
omega-6 PUFAs relative to omega-3s had
higher CRP levels and even greater odds of
fatigue. Women with higher intakes of
omega-3 PUFAs relative to omega-6s had less
inflammation and less physical fatigue
(Alfano, 2012).
